Microsoft wants to change the fundamental architecture of the PC, adding security hardware prior to the release of the next generation of its Windows operating system around 2004, according to a media report and an analyst briefed by the company. The Redmond, Wash.-based company wants future PCs to contain a security technology called Palladium, and is in discussion with Intel and Advanced Micro Devices to develop the chips, according to a report in the July 1 issue of Newsweek magazine published Sunday on the MSNBC Web site. Microsoft owns a stake in MSNBC. | ||

You know, part of this (other than data encryption/DRM between the CPU and devices) could be the .NET CLR in silicon.
------------------- Are some people in this thread afraid they won't be able to pirate MS (or other) software anymore? Conspiracy theories and quick assumptions abound over news that isn't completely detailed on use or implementation, and technology that is still in development. Why is it every time Microsoft comes up with something that is different and offers a solution to a variety of given problems, a large contingent of people come on and start making fantastical claims?
Reading the article and then reading half the messages here, one wonders if they are talking about the same thing. |

I mostly agree with you, however when MS starts to mess(or change) with HARDWARE then I feel that they are moving on ever closer on their agenda to squash out my FREEDOMs. Therefore, I read them and I make decisions based on what I FEAR of them doing down the road(Thats half the reason why it took me so long to stand behind XP, because W2k was fine and I saw XP's activation as another step closer to my freedoms being squashed)! However, Yes everyone appears to be blowing this out of proportion. MS is just adding another service set to windows. Although, A LOT(A HUGE AMOUNT) of information has to be disclosed about the Hardware aspect before I'll feel at ease in the littlest bit about all of this DRM. |

Actually from what I've read, this sounds like a dream that is a good 5 years out, as one must fundamentally overhaul nearly every aspect of the internet to support the featureset.

dabears, what soda is referring to--I think--is redeveloping every app in the world so it can be a trusted app, every web site in the world beign recoded with new authentication systems so that they can be trusted, everyone in the world eliminating their existing hardware and software and purchasing this new hardware and software... At least, that's why I see this taking a long time.
Also realize that this won't do anything unless the other system you are communicating with is also a Palladium system--in other words, early adopters get no benefit unless they live in a discrete, well-defined, closed world--which isn't exactly the type of market that makes sense as early adopters of this system. In my mind, a secure OS has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with DRM or some hardware/software certification program or piracy. |

Does anyone here _really_ think that this is for the good of the 'consumer', and/or that the only thing Microsoft has on it's mind here is your security?
If so, I'll have a bridge to sell you next week, when they are back in stock. Business has been good around here lately... TL |
