Is Bill Gates worried about the outcome of Microsoft's antitrust case? As lawyers for Microsoft and nine states were wrapping up final arguments in the latest chapter of the tussle Wednesday, Gates was telling the Securities and Exchange Commission he'll dump 1 million Microsoft shares within three months. The block of shares is valued at $49.5 million. The states' attorneys general have argued that the software maker should be forced to distribute source code for its Explorer browser, make its Office apps available for competing systems, fully support Sun Microsystems' Java technology, and generally stop bullying its rivals. A company spokeswoman says Gates is merely selling 1 million of his 661 million-plus shares as part of a "routine portfolio diversification." | ||

1 Million?... That's a joke, right? He usually sells multiple tens (or hundreds) of million.
Maybe he needed some pocket cash for a night out. |

| Is the brain of the author of the article functioning? "he'll dump 1 million Microsoft shares within three months" he is not selling today, in the kind of volatile market we are in, three months is a life-time. If we really want to speculate this could mean that Bill is betting the stock will go up and not down. |

Why the dissenting States and the lawyers representing them don't buy MS and try to run the company applying these ideas? They are wasting our money anyway so it is not a big deal. Man, there isn't even the aire of unbiasedness here. The article was written for one reason, and one reason only:
To scare investors. First, this is non-news. CEOs and large investors are constantly shifting their stocks around, even to and from companies they founded. Second, there was no need to mention the anti-trust as it has no relevance to Gates selling his stock. In fact, reading it, it seems completely out of place as the writer doesn't even TRY to relate it to the headline. Third, the way he quotes Gates' assistant is to attempt to cause doubt, as though selling a WHOLE WHOPPING 1 million shares (1/661th of his total) is somehow a major move for Gates. He attempts to imply that Gates' is selling out of MS while the gettin' is good, which is a completely moronic notion since 1M shares is pittance to Gates. It's really sad how the media has an all out PR propaganda war against MS. |
