Microsoft to Cut Off Support for Java in 2004 | |

Microsoft Corp. said on Tuesday it will cut off its support for a key product of rival Sun Microsystems Inc.. Microsoft spokesman Jim Cullinan said the company will no longer include Sun's Java programming language in its Windows operating system starting in 2004, citing security concerns. Cullinan blamed the decision on a previous antitrust settlement between the two companies, which prohibits Microsoft from making any changes to the Java software that it includes in Windows. | ||

Microsoft doesn't want Java because it's cross-platform.
When Microsoft's plan to bastardize Java into a Windows Only solution failed, they pouted and now they are taking their ball and going home. Microsoft wants a Windows-Only world, and will do whatever it takes to get there. Yeah, yeah. There's a little support for other platforms here and there, but only where it makes Microsoft ton's of money. If it didn't, it would become another victim of Microsoft's Windows-Only vision of the world. Now, I'm sure that Bill Gates' three Guardian Angels that float around ActiveWin will have plenty of remarks about this, but it's the way I see things and there isn't anything that will change my mind about it. I hate to break this to TechLarry, but Java isn't cross platform.
If you write code for using one J2EE implementation, it likely won't run on another without major modifications. The J2EE vendors do this because they want to be able to differentiate themselves due to features, performance changes, etc. Which only makes sense. People who argue for cross platform are really arguing for mediocrcy. |

| Larry, Microsoft made changes so that people who weren't going to run their software on anything but Windows but wanted to use Java could actually have some that ran at a half-way decent speed. |

In another article they mention that Microsoft is not allowed to update even for security fixes after January 1, 2004 per the agreement with Sun.
