Sun Micro rolls out low-end server in Microsoft battle | |

Sun Microsystems Inc., aiming to stall Microsoft Corp.'s incursion in the low end of powerful server computers that manage networks, introduced on Tuesday an entry level machine with up to four processors. The Sun Fire V480, starting at about $23,000 with two microchips, is essentially a smaller version of its V880, an economy server introduced in October which holds up to eight chips and that Sun designed specifically to target machines running Microsoft's Windows. Santa Clara, Calif.-based Sun also rolled out a new version of the V880 with faster 900 megahertz UltraSPARC III processors. Both Sun and Microsoft claim their systems are cheaper to use. Sun's new 4-processor machine is certainly cheaper than its predecessor, the 420R which was listed at $28,595 on Sun's web site for a similar configuration with previous-generation microchips. | ||

Ceazar you got ripped... that or your drive array was where the costs were... lol.. try adding in the cost of some sun storage to th $23k. Also as usually I'm sure sun's charging extra for keyboard etc... just like every other vendor.. I've rarely heard of a server come with a monitor, ups,keybord...and sure as sh*t not a rack.. maybe the rails though if you buying a cpq.

Most production servers are in the $20-40k range... When you start talking dual or quad processors, redundant power, lot's of memory, so on and so forth...
Look at the price of a dual Itanium server by comparison... They start around $20k... start adding memory at $1,000/gig and so forth and it adds up fast. |

| #8 , but it all depends on memory and HD configs in them as well as NIC config and SCSI RAID config. Shit the last Dell I bought 3.5 years ago was $29,000 for Dual P-II 333's and 512 MB ECC memory. Plus 5-9 GB drives in the RAID array, with the PERC RAID controller with 32MB ECC on it. Dual 700 watt power supplies as well. |
