Browser Makes Last Stab at Microsoft | |

Web browser project run primarily by volunteers and backed by America Online is making one last stab at challenging the dominance of Microsoft Corp. The group released its Mozilla 1.0 package this month — some four years after AOL's Netscape unit launched the project. And while analysts aren't sanguine about the browser's prospects, there is excitement among those who believe Mozilla's real strength lies in its versatility and potential for gadgets such as wireless devices where Microsoft is not yet dominant. "Internet technology is (being) transformed into a privatized world, developed and run for the benefit of a small number of vendors," said Mitchell Baker, the project's general manager. "Mozilla is a critical component of keeping the Web open and allowing innovation." | ||

LOL! Timely article :)
I don't know if it will ever challange IE, but Mozilla is a superb browser and it's email client is the most flexible I've ever seen. Four main features really stand out to me. 1. Tabbed Browsing (and don't give me that "They stole it from Opera crap"). 2. Group Bookmarking. 1/2a. Add the above two together, and you end up with the most efficient browsing experience possible today. 3. Extensive flexibility in email account creation and management. 4. The best and most flexible multiple SMTP-Server system I've ever seen. They need to get the Plugin mess squared away, though. It's too hard to install things like Flash, QuickTime, etc... because those aren't written to recognize Mozilla. TL |

TechLarry - As far as the best and flexible multiple SMTP-Server support you've seen... Have you ever configured Outlook XP? I have two email accounts and have absolutely no problem managing the two. #2 - True. Most of the updates have not been super apparent. Lot's of stuff with XML and so forth. But mostly it's just been evolution of speed, stability, robustness, etc. Still a lot of people have moved to IE 6.0 on their own. |

I use Outlook XP every single day on several machines. It is a very good email client, and in fact handles pasted in formatted content better than anything out there, and I do like the single-pst file method of storage. However, as far as configurability goes, Mozilla still has it beat. I use both. I use Mozilla on one machine as a 'collector' that archives email from over a dozen email addresses, and can send from any account using a specific SMTP server for that account. It's much more flexible than Outlook in this regard. Also, the 2GB limit of Outlook XP PST files would get me in trouble real quick. TL |

I can tell you right now I don't use Mozilla for two reasons
1. It doesn't support my back and forward buttons 2. Non-standard widgets |
