Palm Inc on Monday said it has begun sending to handheld computer makers a more potent version of the software that drives the pocket-sized organizers, which it hopes will squash the advances of rival Microsoft Inc. and revitalize demand that has been flagging. Palm, the leading maker of handhelds and the operating system (OS) software that powers them, said it has started shipping the completed Palm OS 5 to licensees and developers. | ||

Perhaps Palm isn't the roll-over-dead Netscape-like "competitor" for MS I thought they were originally.
While I still don't see anything revolutionary in this new OS (still crappy multimedia, still fixed window sizes, still cheesy color support, etc) or innovative, at least they're not pulling a "Netscape 4" piece of crap move like Netscape did. Perhaps in PalmOS 8 we'll have what was in PocketPC 2000. |

| 14hrs of battery life isn't that bad, especially considering how much you can do with a PPC200x device. |

#2 - Compare a Palm m515 to a Toshiba E310. Both the same price.
#4 - I agree I don't quite see how Palm can be making battery claims if they don't have any shipping devices of comparable ability. The m515 certainly isn't comparable. #5 - Palm is moving to the same processor Microsoft is already using. The ARM. Overall we'll have to see if PalmOS5 can actually live up to the hype. If it's notoriously buggy, or incapable of doing the same things as the PocketPC, it will face some resistance. |
