Old code in Windows is security threat | |

Microsoft will more quickly retire old code in its Windows operating system and other software as a result of the company's four-month-old "trustworthy computing" initiative, the company's lead bug basher said in an interview. The revelation follows last week's warning that a serious vulnerability in Microsoft's Internet Explorer occurred in the software supporting a decade-old protocol that has rarely been used since the World Wide Web became popular. "A lot of the (coming) design changes are to remove this feature or turn that one off by default," said Steve Lipner, director of security assurance for Microsoft and the man on the ground for the company's trustworthy computing initiative. He added that when Microsoft is faced with a choice between removing old, possibly insecure code and keeping a feature to please a small fraction of customers, increasingly security is winning out. "Do we think that things will be retired more quickly? Sure," Lipner said. | ||

#2 - I think the issue here is one of code rot.
It's very doubtful any maintenance has been done to the gopher code in years because the spec has not changed dramatically, and hardly anybody uses it. The question is whether to maintain the code in place or remove it, to isolate the risk. |

It takes time, money, and human resources to fix bugs.
It takes a considerable amount to prevent new bugs and go back and fix old bugs. Going back and fixing parts of code that no one uses only helps the previous two efforts. Getting rid of Gopher is a step in the right direction. |

#8, I think you did miss it.
How about haulting ALL projects for 30 days for JUST bug/security check on ALL code (Windows had an even bigger hault, actually). Or how about making all of their employees take classes on writing secure code. They are taking it out because it would cost too much money to go through the code for a protocol that isn't really even used anymore (and in the places that it is, they need to get up to date). I've not seen a Gopher site in MANY years, back when the web was nothing and Gopher had it all. |
