Linux contract treads on Microsoft ground | |

The German government has signed a deal with IBM and Linux company SuSE that makes it easier for government offices to use the open-source operating system, a move that addresses concerns about relying too heavily on Microsoft products. The government isn't mandating the use of Linux, but the deal makes it possible for hundreds of federal, regional and local governments to purchase IBM computers running SuSE's version of Linux at a discount price, said German foreign ministry spokesman Dirk Inger. The purchasing framework covers both desktop computers, where Microsoft has its stronghold, and more powerful networked server systems where Linux is a stronger competitor. | ||

| Great. Let them all move to open source software and Linux and other such software. In 5-10 years, we'll see for sure which one is superior. |

a share shake? Whatever that is, MS has it already with utter and complete dominance of gov't contracts in Germany right now. And that's exactly why we are seeing the migration AWAY from MS now--because of its "superiority."

Well actually there is no signifigant move away from Microsoft. That's a fantasy resulting from every Linux sale getting tremendous press.

Let them buy Linux. But when they come crawling back in a couple of years... they will have to buy full versions of the MS software... as they won't have any software assurance. :-) |

This is called competition, there is nothing new here. "Umm yea don't think that will be happening. Once people get used to not opening their wallets to MS I doubt they will come back for more." Let us see what happens after they realize how much will cost support the "open source" software." "Linux and Open Source are here to stay. Learn to love it. " Actually they are floating around since a long time ago. Why should I learn to love it? I change my opinions as result of an evolution process not just because I have to or because is "politically correct". |

I'm just concerned when companies or government based decisions not on quality, facts, or statistics, but on pure emotion.
I've seen companies that ban MS software just because the CIO doesn't like MS for some retarded reason. The company suffers because MS does make SOME (at least) quality and useful software. Choosing the right solution for every job should be priority. I'm sure there are some facets of Government computing where OSS would work very well and benefit the Gov. and the people. However, to say definitively that you're going completely one way or another for dogmatic reasons is just pure stupidity. I hope that Germany is making informed decisions and plans on evaluating each situation to see which software is best for which situation, rather than listening to proaganda or FUD from either side. |

#15 - Considering there are how many computers out there? Something like 500 million if not more just counting desktops. Linux carving out niches is probably a good thing.
If it gets 5% market penetration that will be enough to sustain a few small companies. The computer market is so large today that companies can have large numbers of customers and not impact others at all. As such stories like #11 don't really have much of an impact on my life or even Microsoft. |
