Microsoft's proposed middleware plan--to hide icons that lead to Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, and other apps--is due to arrive later this year as part of Service Pack 1 for Windows XP (news - web sites). As expected whenever the middleware issue is brought up, there's plenty of turmoil on the TalkBack boards. "Sure, it's possible--even probable--that companies other than Microsoft would offer new modules to supply these functions. Software developers could then, presumably, use the services provided by these modules to bolster their apps," my colleague David Coursey wrote in a recent column. "But all those middleware apps would have their own programming interfaces through which other apps and the operating system itself would access them. This means that applications developers would have to decide which of these programming interfaces to support--with no discernible advantage to users. In other words, developers would have to work harder just to stay where they are today," Coursey wrote. | ||

| #12, I am not #9, but I would like to take a stab at this question. The bookstore owner can decide what type of books/coffee to sell at its store just as Microsoft can decide what middleware to include. Just as MS is not and should not be able to decide what software runs on an OS, the bookstore owner can not control what the consumer buys, that decision is the his (or hers). If I have misunderstood your question, sorry, and if #9 disagrees with me I'm sure they would be willing to give their take on it. |

Maybe I am having an excessively slow mental day, but I'm just not getting what you are saying.
"MS not allowing the software to work with Windows does not directly control what software the consumer buys." When has MS not allowed REAL software to work with Windows? I'm not talking beta software, or something from the DOS age. If you want to know how to build software, even software that directly competes with a Microsoft product, go to http://msdn.microsoft.com and they will tell you step by step exactly how to do it. |

| Ok, 16, I totally understand your point, but should my local cable company not be able to add new channels, because they are a monopoly? Sure, my local cable company may only reach 500,000 people or so (I have no idea), which is quite different from MS's customer base, but the point is the same, why shouldn't they be able to add something for free? |

It is the exact same situation, there is one big company, Time Warner, and then there is maybe one smaller company. Since Time Warner is still a monopoly in the area, does that make it wrong for them to introduce new channels or features? Of course not.
