Sony, Microsoft Mixed on Console/PC Cooperation | |

The console gaming arm of Microsoft Corp. will make use of online facilities established by the company's PC gaming arm, while Sony's console games group will go it alone in online gaming, the two companies said on Friday. In separate interviews on the last day of the game industry's annual trade show, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, executives of the two companies also said online console gaming would not eat into the established PC online business. Representatives from Sony Computer Entertainment of America, which runs Sony Corp's PlayStation 2 business in the U.S., met with engineers from Sony Online Entertainment, a separate division, but decided to use their own resources for the PS2's upcoming online offerings, according to Scott McDaniel, vice president of marketing at Sony Online. SCEA will release an adapter in late August to enable online play for the PS2, allowing publishers to operate their own networks for each individual game, rather than having one large, closed network for the entire service. | ||

To me, this is a sure sign that Sony is doomed. It will take years for the house of cards to collapse, but the inability of Sony Computer Entertainment to work with Sony Online Entertainment typifies what's wrong with big companies. I have seen all too often how technology organizations fail because one division is forced to duplicate another's resources (and compete with that division for talent), because one division treats another division too much like an external customer or vendor (with mistrust and/or greed), because one division prizes itself so much more highly than its family that it wants to "charge back" or "cross charge" (or whatever term it uses for internal charges) another division to the detriment of both divisions' business.
While Microsoft has not been immune to petty internal fights and interdivisional power struggles of its own, Microsoft has historically been successful in getting the internal competitions to reach conclusion as quickly as possible, then putting an end to the bickering (even if it forces key people into permanent "sabbatical") and moving on in a way which leverages its assets and shares its resources. The ability of the Xbox team to work with the Zone team may not translate into Xbox profitability next month, or more Xbox sales next month, but it means Microsoft is sticking together patiently while its competitor begins to self-destruct, a story all too familiar. Sony might as well begin preparing its antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft now, because history tells us that it's just a matter of time before it becomes so desperate that it must turn to litigation as a last resort. |
