Netscape 7.0 Rekindles Browser Battles | |

America Online's Netscape Communication's subsidiary on Wednesday launched a preview of its newest Web browser, another sign of AOL's reinvigorated campaign to win consumers back from Microsoft. Netscape 7.0 is the latest browser version developed around a technology called Gecko, which was created by an open-source browser movement known as Mozilla and funded by AOL. Over the past year, the online giant has been testing Gecko in preview versions of its popular flagship AOL service. Although AOL uses Microsoft's Internet Explorer as its default Web browser, the company has been clear about its intentions for reviving Netscape. It is beta testing its AOL 7.0 online service with Gecko for both Windows and Mac users, and its CompuServe subsidiary is using Gecko in the official version of its service. "'Browser wars' is a catchy term but not necessarily apropos," said AOL spokesman Marty Gordon. "Microsoft was found to be engaging in monopolistic behavior. We think consumers want a choice, and Netscape is giving it to them." Gordon would not say whether future generations of the AOL service plan to drop IE as the default Web-browsing technology. Netscape 7.0 Preview Release 1 includes the following new features:

lol. They wouldn't have even had to do this if they had used Netscape when they first bought the company. AOL: Deny your own resources to support Microsoft. Sue Microsoft over the power you helped them gain. Switch to the browser you helped kill to make it seem as if you are saving the net from Microsoft, even though you just want greater control over your users. Oh yeah, and once again, artificially upping the version number so as to appear to be ahead of Microsoft. ---------------------- "Microsoft was found to be engaging in monopolistic behavior. I just love how many things are installed with it on my desktop and such... its like getting a brand new PC from gateway all over again :) </SARCASM> This is exactly why I quit using Netscape or even installing it... it tries to take over your machine (like AOL) and that is annoying. |

| In responce to number 8 (Mr.Humpty), I thought I would give this new beta a try and it installed seven new icons on my desktop. And most of them aren't even real programs! |

The memory taken up by the DLLs loaded by IE are reflected in the memory usage shown in the Task Manager. |

Someone pointed me to this www.netcaptor.com which is kind of interesting. I haven't tried it yet, but it seems to be an example of the type of innovation now possible because of IE bundling with the desktop.

#18 - Interesting. Here's a guy that has brought new innovation to browsers(he had tabs before Netscape), and has created a new market as a result of IE being built in and customizable(something that wasn't possible with Netscape despite your claims), and you poo-poo it.
If you don't want innovation and competition in the marketplace then just say so. |

#22 - As to the point of whether this is or is not possible. Think of the work saved by this guy because he didn't have to build an HTML rendering engine, he simply reused the components provided by IE.
I'm fairly confident that Netscape 4.x and earlier cannot be embedded within another application. That was not possible until the more recent 6.x/7.x versions with the Gecko engine. So perhaps he could do it today, but it wasn't until Microsoft created their embedded browser that Netscape suddenly got the bright idea to rewrite their software to do the same. Again, another innovation that can be attributed to Microsoft. ;) From what I hear Netcaptor had tabs since 1999... about the point Mozilla was still in it's infancy. |
