Windows 8 and the touchy future of PCs | |

In my post last week, I asked for two simple changes to Windows 8: Allow users to uninstall Metro, and bring back the Start menu. The bottom line is that Metro is terrible with a mouse. It's a touch interface, period. Of course, I tend to think of a touch interface as a way of interacting with a tablet or a smartphone. But as several readers observed, in my post last week I failed to cite the obvious: Part of the idea of Windows 8 is to move users toward a touchscreen interface for desktops and laptops. And a bunch of manufacturers have lined up to deliver just that. | ||

That's one thing people tend to overlook. Microsoft never designs its windows releases with legacy hardware in mind PRIMARILY. It's building for new and upcoming technology... That's why a lot of people were fucked when we transitioned from xp to vista. Their old tech wasn't powerful enough or advanced enough to fully take advantage of many enhancements vista introduced (and 7 made better). Now we're going from 7-8 and the same problem has arisen that took place between xp and vista.
Microsoft doesn't want people to upgrade their OS... They want us to buy new devices with their OS preinstalled. It's what they've always wanted. Upgrades are horrid and are a tech support nightmare. Better to just throw out the old and buy the new. |

I think there was a time where that was the case. However, processors are so powerful now they can last longer. Moreover, ram is sooo cheap and solid state harddrives are proliferating to the point that a typical system can last you a few years longer than previously.
That said, with all of the compelling designs coming out - 27" touch screens and notebook/tablet hybrids, the upgrade timelines may schrink for home users because some people just always gotta have the latest and greatest devices. |

| Why would anyone want to uninstall the two most important aspects of the new flagship Operating system? I've used every Microsoft O/S since the late 1980's and I can honestly say Windows 8 is ultra sleek, fast and fluid just as the designers envisaged. Its way ahead of Windows Vista and Windows 7 and providers developers and Microsoft with new revenue streams. The desktop is still there for doing the day-to-day work, but it's refreshing to jump into a whole new era of computing without doing away with the old. |

Not interested in Win8.
This is the first time I'm not even considering upgrading. Win8 is a clickosaurus. You'll do more clicking in Win8 than Win7. |
