| It may be preferable to increase security at Hotmail. I know many people that have had their accounts hijacked, even where the password was eight characters with a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols. Being "hip" isn't going to improve the reputation of Hotmail. Better security will and proving that it is indeed better. Hotmail has done an excellent job of improving their spam filter. Now, how about making it more secure from hackers? |

#1: Hacked or Socially stolen - there's a big difference. Think about it, they all use the same or similar password requirements (one uppercase, one lowercase, a number, one special character etc.). If hotmail is vulnerable, they all are. Educating people about fishing and socially engineered tricks designed to get passwords is the key.
Personally, I try to keep financial passwords different from email passwords and email passwords different from facebook passwords. |

That link gives no inkling that server security is involved in GMAIL's lowered hacked numbers. I don’t know how you can make that assumption. I had a friend whose Hotmail account was suspended because of suspicious activity. A day later she got an email from another friend saying they had received some suspicious email from her and that her email was probably compromised. Hmmm – Hotmail recognized suspicious activity and immediately suspended her account. That sounds like pretty good server security to me.
I would suggest that Hotmail users are generally older and less internet savvy than GMAIL users and are therefore more susceptible to socially engineered scams. I can’t prove it but I’ll bet the demographics would back me up. So in essence, by becoming more “hip”, Hotmail will attract more internet savvy users and drive those numbers down. |
