Microsoft's share of the smartphone market is plummeting at an alarming rate--so much so that the company's last ditch effort to make an impact in mobility, Windows Phone 7, may be irrelevant by the time it manages to ship the much-anticipated Mango update and realize its partnership with Nokia later this year. Data released Thursday by comScore shows that Microsoft's average share of the U.S. smartphone OS market over the three months ended in June came in at just 5.8%, down from 7.5% from the three months ended in March, and down from 8% for the three months ended in January. | ||

Not surprising when you walk into a Verizon store and there is a whopping ONE handset to choose from. There are a lot of smartphones yet to be sold and when the public actually gets a chance to choose from a selection of phones with Mango on board I think there will be more to talk about. Let's see where Windows Phone is a year from now.

As Apple fanboys often point out, the best product isn't always the best selling product.
In this case, the abject failure of Microsoft to provide the proper incentives/training to their sales channel is the root cause of failure. Walk into AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, etc, and you'll get sales people pushing iPhones and Andriod devices, and almost nobody who knows jack about WP7. Most simply give their canned answer for Windows Mobile - which is always negative in nature. If your primary sales channel isn't motivated to sell, how can you possiby expect anything different? |

| I've still never even seen a working Windows 7 Phone. I've seen the phones in stores with the sticker on the front that looks like the home screen, but never a live, in-use phone. |

This is sad, it looks like a great product, MS just can't get their marketing right. They needed get it out there, give it away to students for a limited time.
Even in Windows 7 there are features very few know about or have tried. Friends are surprised when I say I watch and record TV on my PC. They have never used the WMC or know about it, and don't get me started on Speech Recognition, a great product. How many know about or have used it? Windows CardSpace anyone? |

"The phone for people that spend too much time on their phone". That was one of the stupidist ad campaigns ever concocted. And then we later learned that they stole it from a parody ad. Why would they use a parody that pokes fun at a product line to sell their product? As Vegas-Bob wrote MS can't get the marketing right. MS seems to never point out the best features of their products in ads. Apple kicks ass in marketing. Too bad IMHO. This post was edited by bobsireno on Thursday, August 11, 2011 at 12:23. |
