Just how loyal are you to Microsoft Windows? | |

I noticed a funny thing during the Fourth of July weekend. I wrote a couple quick articles about Google+, but since it was a holiday weekend in the U.S. and I initially thought Google+ didn’t have a whole lot to do with IT or business, I posted them in my personal blog (jasonhiner.com) instead of my Tech Sanity Check blog on TechRepublic, and then I simply promoted them on Twitter, Google+, and Facebook. When I looked at the stats for those posts, I was startled by the user data for operating systems and web browsers. I noticed that Microsoft Windows was far lower than you’d expect (well under 50% of visits) and Internet Explorer was nowhere to be found. | ||

It's not about loyalty for me. It's about need. I work in a corporate environment, so Windows is what it is.
I will say, with Windows 7 Windows is actually no longer a pain in the ass to live with. It doesn't seem to suffer near as much from Windows Rot as previous versions. With that said, if I wasn't working in IT any more, my house would be full of Mac's instead of PC's. I would keep one high-end PC for gaming and the rare, odd chore that doesn't have a Mac equivalent (can't think of any off hand, but they show up from time to time). |

Not yet a Google+ user. I am a long time MS OS user since Dos and the first Windows release, even considered a Mac (before the color version). Windows was always more affordable. I built my last 4 PC's, have had my headaches, tried Linux but always came back to Windows. I would on occasion visit an Apple store, but never felt comfortable in them. Now over time I grew to have an absolute distaste for Apple and Steve Jobs. I use IE9, Chrome and Firefox at the same time for different reasons. I confess I did buy an iPod (the Shuffle) once, but now with my Android phone no need to ever look at an Apple product. The Chrome OS looks interesting as a dual boot, but not the Chrome books.
Currently have 2 PC’s and a Laptop all running Windows 7 (plan to update to Windows 8). So I would say I’m a loyal Windows user. |

I wouldn't use the word "loyal" to describe my position. I'd merely say that I'm well aware of the amount of time it would take to reach my same level of comfort, functionality, and safety in another operating system as what I have with Windows. From my current perspective, switching to Apple would be out of the question, and switching to linux is an alternative that's still significantly less attractive than Windows, especially with the growing body of freeware and open source programming available that runs in Windows.
I still reserve the right to send telepathic death rays at Redmond for their misuse of software patents to suppress the true innovations of competitors, but any such death rays have other targets besides Microsoft as well. |
