Sony PS2 cuts put the heat on Microsoft | |

Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo will launch new campaigns in the game console wars next week, with the main weapons this time involving online gaming and price cuts. The Electronic Entertainment Expo, the game industry's main trade show, kicks off May 22 in Los Angeles. Games are the premier attraction at E3, with publishers showing off every title they plan to release during the coming year. Highlights this year range from previews of potential blockbusters such as "Doom III" to a video jigsaw puzzle featuring Penthouse's Miss April. But hardware manufacturers will make their dent before the show starts, including several days of press events intended to set up business strategies for the coming year. Sony got the ball rolling Tuesday by cutting the U.S. price of its PlayStation 2 game console by one-third and dropping the price of its older PlayStation One by 50 percent. Effective immediately, the PS2 costs $199, down from $299, while the PSX now sells for $49, down from $99. | ||

Didn't the XBox price cuts happen first?

Xbox hasn't cut the price in the US at all yet - Sony know like everyone else that Microsoft are due to cut the price at E3 - so yet again Sony get one over Microsoft by doing it before them, this time making it look like Microsoft are again playing catch-up - but then again they are, they are. Microsoft are now the 3rd most popular console behind the Gamecube after Nintendo's rather fab sales in Europe over the last week.
Update: From what I've just been told - Microsoft will announce their Xbox reduction tomorrow along with some game titles going down in price. This post was edited by Byron_Hinson[AW] on Tuesday, May 14, 2002 at 18:14. |

If game titles went down in price, a lot more games would certainly sell.
If games were $30 they would be impulse buys for many more people. At $50, that doesn't happen. It's sort of like when DVDs dropped down to under $20. At $15 I have no problem buying a movie that I liked... At $25 I better have really liked it. |

Wait just a freakin second!!
Sony is trying to step out infront of Microsoft(because MS announced about a month ago that they would be cuttin prices at E3), but Microsoft is now ((rumoring)) that the X-box 2 will be released in September at a price of $249 http://www.warp2search.net/article.php?sid=4510 Also, Sony is now trumping their agreement to work with IBM on their new Chip for their Play Station 3! Well, should I buy an X-Box, or should I wait for a few months and pay $50 dollars more for a X-BOX 2???? Also does anyone know what the difference between the X-box 2 and X-box will be? I suspect the mod chips right now are fictional, like the longhorn demos.
