Microsoft's mastermind brews a rival to Java | |

When Microsoft needed a new technology to preserve its software dominance, it turned to Anders Hejlsberg. The 40-year-old software guru had won the respect of more than a million software developers who embraced Borland's Turbo Pascal and Delphi, two tools he created to help programmers write their software. Now Microsoft is hoping developers will flock to his latest creation: the C# software programming language, a crucial piece of Microsoft's new software strategy that moves its Windows operating system and software to the Web. After several years of development, C# (pronounced "C-sharp") is the Redmond, Wash.-based company's answer to one of its biggest threats--the Java language created by rival Sun Microsystems and supported by two other fierce Microsoft competitors, Oracle and IBM. | ||

I've been knee deep in J2EE (EJB, Servlets, database, etc) for the past few months, and I've got to say, what a horribly hacked-together, disorganized mess of an enterprise infrastructure.
Just from the basic marketing blurb I've read about .NET and some of the samples I've tried, it's so much more well put together. The only decent App server for J2EE is WebLogic, and it to is a cobbled piece of junk with no security infrastructure and basic, if not broken transaction property. Compare this with Application Cetner Server, which is an elegant, well-tested, proven and coherent enterprise server with real load-balancing and clusters, a well-thought out and proven (#1) transaction processor, as well as a thorough security and messaging infrastructure, only the absolute die-hard Microsoft hater would disagree that MS has their sh*t together much more than Sun.
Java is a slow, disorganized mess. Sun's answer to this, of course, is that if you buy more hardware, it'll be faster. J2EE is only for pushing more Sun hardware, and not for anyone serious about building an enterprise app. Development time is horribly slow and complicated, and EJB only adds to this. The Apache Struts infrastructure makes things somewhat simpler, but it's still a hacked-together pile of junk in the end. |

| Well, I think DNA is slightly more coherent, though. Java itself isn't bad, but J2EE is a horrible mess. Many of the new "features" that J2EE offers are inherent in COM+. In fact, COM+ is much better, IMHO, even without stateful sessions. Database access is far easier, faster, and more efficient with ADO and MDAC than with the horrible mess that is JDBC. Writing enterprise components isn't an all-day experience like EJBs. IMHO, writing for classes for every one piece of functionality I need isn't my idea of "rapid development". -d |

| #6,7: C# is faster than Java for sure. C# is a seperate entity than C & C++. C# is very close to Java, without any of Java's limitations (multiple inheritence, etc). You can download the .NET Beta for free from Microsoft's site. I would assume C#'s GC does a much better job than Java's since C# seems to be much better all around than Java, and C# is quite newer, so MS has had some time to learn from Java's mistakes. |

#10: Of course. When you ask Sun or IBM about Java speed, they don't care. They care more about how many more servers can they get you to buy to achieve any worthwhile performance. With J2EE, it's a ready-made big-iron seller. You have to buy 4x the hardware as Windows DNA to achieve anywhere near the performance. If they care so much about scalability in Java, how come no Java transaction processor has ever showed up on the TPC benchmark (the industry standard for measuring the performance of a transaction process). The answer is, because J2EE is a slow, cobbled mess that can't perform worth talking about. Sure, you could spend $15 million and probably show up somewhere in the top 200 in the TPC, but who cares? By the time you've spent that much money on IBM or Sun hardware, you could've spent $5 million on a Windows 2000 cluster and achieved 10x the speed |

| #12: C# and all the .NET languages are going to be compiled to what's called a "Common Language Runtime" or CLR. This CLR is similar to the Java Virtual Machine, but doesn't have to do as much interpreting. Imagine .NET as Java, but you're not locked into one language. The CLR can be ported to other systems and the languages will work cross-platform. Corel is working with Microsoft on making a Linux CLR, and I wouldn't be suprised if Microsoft was thinking about a Solaris CLR just to poke at Sun for the whole Java fallout. |
