Microsoft needs to jump start Windows Phone 7; Here are five suggestions | |

Microsoft has reportedly sold 2 million Windows Phone 7 licenses, but the actual sell-through—consumers who actually purchase these smartphones—remains a mystery. Now NPD Group puts Windows Phone 7 market share at 2 percent of the smartphone market in the fourth quarter. Clearly, Windows Phone 7 didn’t light up sales dramatically. AT&T gave Windows Phone 7 a passing mention on its earnings conference call, but highlighted Research in Motion sales as strong. NPD reports that Windows Phone 7 devices debuted with 2 percent market share tied with Palm’s WebOS. Microsoft’s Windows Mobile market share fell 3 points to 4 percent. If you assume that Windows Phone 7 eclipses Windows Mobile, Microsoft will wind up with about 6 percent smartphone share in the next few quarters. | ||

I'm a die-hard Microsoft fan. I've used variants of the WinCE system since it was in beta. I hugely overpaid for the first iPad when it came out.
But Microsoft has lost me on phones and probably tablets as well. I got a HD2 last year LOVED the experience. SenseUI on top of Windows Mobile was awesome. But instead they throw the whole thing out (backward compatibility and all) and orphan a good fan base to go to something new. MetroUI is cool but isn't particularly more compelling than other offerings. Couple that with no tethering (yeah, I know it's largely up to carriers) and a locked down system (can't even use the damn thing as a storage device and there's no file explorer) and what is my reason to go with Windows Phone 7? Oh, and then there's the nasty fact that they likely won't even port the Windows Phone 7 experience to tablets - I'm supposed to wait until Windows 8 for that. Balmer has completely screwed this up. Please someone, kick him out. |

We're tesing three Samsung Focus devices from AT&T now.
Having been in the wireless space for a long time (we build and host the software most carriers use for their infrastructure, PM roll-outs for all areas of concern - everything from engineering to Indian Affairs, etc...), we're in a good place to assess how well it does against other consumer facing smartphones (WinMo 6.5 has it all over WP7 in the enterprise until MS updates 7 (sigh.... frown....). They have a shot, as the initial Focus device is good, but there is a lot missing in the OS and a lot else that needs work. It has so much promise, so I hope they will keep their feet (both of them) on the gas... BUT... something tells me they will not... and that something centers on one other thing I know about Win 8 that I cannot talk about and about how its modules can run on different platforms in different ways. |

Microsoft usually nails it in version 3.
My wife has a Samsung Focus. It's a good phone, but it doesn't compare to my iPhone 3GS. MS has a long ways to go to catch up to the iPhone, espcially in App support. The potential is there if they don't screw it up. |

#2 Iketchum: I have a HD7 and I could not agree more with you; a great potential but what it was shipped was a half backed OS at best.
The idea that everything has to be synced in the "Cloud" ONLY is preposterous to say the least; and this without considering that carriers are raising prices and lowering caps on data plans. And I am not even going to start about how messy the OS when running on "Factory SIM Free" phones; the NGs are full of comments from people who spent €500/600 and are unable to use MMS and other issues. I am not optimistic about its future too: besides these "updates" coming nobody knows when, I predict, and I do not have NDA information, that W8 will unify MS OSes, will run on Smartphones and WP7 will be abandoned. #5 I don't think it matters that much since WP7 apps are created in Silverlight, so no problems should they decide to change OS underneath.
