The next version of Windows will run on ARM-based systems, Microsoft announced at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, and in theory that could squeeze the operating system onto smaller and lighter form-factors. But according to at least one analyst, Microsoft will also need to make some fundamental changes to Windows’ software if it wants to compete against Apple’s iOS and Google Android for a chunk of the tablet market.

no no no
I don't want a Windows form Tablet to be and Ipad...
These are 2 products that serves different purpose:
- If I want to work, browse flash site, work into my Outlook, Word and PowerPoint and be productive: give me my Windows 7 Tablet
- If I want to read e-book, and play I-fart, I will use an Ipad.
Little funny story:
I was at a customer yesterday. The 5 VP's have ordered Ipad before christmas.
Well well, guess what : all 5 VP's told me: I CAN'T work with that thing, what can I do ???
Funny, and true....

#1: What response did you give your customer to their comments that they can't work with their iPads?

#2: The exchange in question never actually happened. Just like that time parkkker had the imaginary neighbour who bought a notebook with Linux on it, only to be saved by parkkker telling him to get a Windows notebook.
Basically, if you're a Windows shop, you would have to be just about the biggest idiot in the world to equip your execs with Mac products. That's why I call BS on this.

It should be a mix of functional factors:
1) It needs a symplistic, touch driven interface like the iPad or phone 7 metaphores
2) It needs to capture writing with a stylus (for Onenote)
3) It needs to to run in "docked" mode as a regular, albeit slimmer Windows 7 OS.

#4: Relatively easy fixing: just add a different GUI to Windows 7; the new GUI will appear when the device, in this case a "Slate" one, is run with the screen flat on top, covering the keyboard.
While I do not know what this new GUI could be something like WP7 seems not enough to me: the device is still a full computer not a phone or a "Smart Display" like the iPad.

@latch
You are right...I made it up a little bit...it was 3 directors and 2 VPs.
@bob
I just told then, "Told you guys"
FYI: I am friendly with the upper management.

Latch,
I have heard similar stories. My software vendor equiped it's entire sales force with these and the complaints sound something like - they are great for demonstrating dashboards and scorecards, but they are very difficult to get real work done on.
Fritz,
It sure sounds easy, but I'm not sure Win 7 in it's current form will cut it from a power consumption standpoint.

rxcall: yes I do not think that you could get 8 hours using W7 but...... you cannot expect to get the same fuel consumption driving a Porsche and a Smart.
Personally I prefer a full computer with 4 hours than an iPad with 8. At the end of the story I think it will depend of what people want to do with their devices.
Btw I have a HTC HD7 and witha moderate usage battery last just a day; my previous HD 2 was way better.

I'm also thinking that you will need extra resources when docked - maybe somehow plug into more memory so we can run programs like Inormatica and Visual Studio 2010 that currently give my laptop fits.

I'd take a tablet over an iPad any day. With the iPad what can you do? Surf. Check emails. Tweet. Facebook updates. Show a picture. Show a video [after transfering from another system].
With a Windows tablet you can do the above and more. Use real applications [not something that is controlled by Apple because they want their 30% cut from the revenue].

Play Angry Birds and Cut the Rope :) The truth is that for a lot of people, the iPad and devices such as, do everything or just about everything that they need to do often. Email + Web + Social Stuff + Personal Stuff (Photos, Movies) + Fun Stuff (games, puzzles, sudoku, whatever you fancy!) is just about all that they do... or at least it covers 95% of their needs... which is why the iPad has been so popular! Geeks are not the target market and never will be - coz the geek market is too small. Which is a pity... i'd love something in that same form factor but with a ton more power and function behind it... maybe a jailbroken iPad2 with usb and camera will be enough!

You can surf - without Flash.
You can show a picture but you have to copy it from another system.
You can Show a video but you have to copy it from another system.
Tweeting on your phone appears to faster
I would be willing to bet Latch's paycheck that 95% of iPad users own and will continue to own a laptop and/or desktop or both.
This thing is an ideal coffee table device that, in it's present form, only supplements our current devices. That said, I will probably get one when version 2 comes out.
