According to unofficial information Windows 8 (expected to be released by mid-2012) will give its users a full 3D-interface. As informed by UberGizmo , the central theme of Windows Vista and Windows 7 called ‘Aero’ will be replaced by the new one called Wind, which will give it a complete third dimension not only to the desktop, but also to the interface of other elements.

Ok, so take the increased power usage by the video card (which is substantial when in 3D mode I assure you), and multiply that by 5000 workers in a business office.
3D has become the next, great Profit-Machine everywhere, and IMHO it's all pretty damned useless.

Well the original article states that the 3D interface will be optional, available only on the 64 version of the OS and, supposedly, will use 170 MB of the GPU memory.
Besides it will require special monitors.
Personally I would be happy if a GUI like the one showed in "Vision for 2019" demo will be used.

Take both the concept and especially the details with a hefty grain of salt, folks. Also, #2, even if this is true (I'm not saying it isn't...), I didn't see anything about requiring special monitors. If you're talking about 3D in the sense of autostereoscopic monitors or requiring glasses... well, I'll be happy to place a hefty bet against you on that. :P

Original article:
http://www.windows8italia.com/
Quote
Wind sarà utilizzabile solo su Windows 8 a 64-Bit e sarà completamente in 3D, ma funzionerà comunque anche con monitor normali.

Translation:
Wind will run only on Windows 8 64 Bit and will be completely 3D, athough it will also work on regular monitors.
Now what do they mean with 3D is unclear; MS Research Department has played with the idea of a 3D desktop for a long, long time:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOsQO_EMf-4
Personally I do not think, and hope, that this 3d idea for Windows 8 is referring to the effects you get in the movie theaters with glasses first because after a while it really strain the eyes, second because I do not see many people willing to wear glasses to use their desktop.
As for autostereoscopic monitors I strongly doubt they will be widely available by 2012, less than ever at an affordable price.
Now if what MS is considering as "3D desktop" is a desktop with a "depth" the concept is interesting although I wonder how it will be implemented.
Said that the first line in the original article states that all the information reported are based on rumors so........

I'm hoping it's a 3D graphc interface and not a 3D film interface.
Maybe this will be a tie in with "Kinect" like Minority Report.
Pardon the pun, but I won't "stand" for this.

#4: They're not talking 3D as in stuff popping out of your monitor. I'm sure it's just the next step in using the 3D aspects of today's video cards.
#5: Seems to me it was 95% done years ago. It's not live yet because Ketchum can't create a filter to contain my awesomeness.
#7: Geez, I hope not. Minority Report had the stupidest interface ever. Hope your gym membership is paid up; you're going to need massive shoulder caps to use a UI where you constantly wave your arms in the air.
