MS customers balk at licensing program | |

With a summer deadline looming, about two-thirds of Microsoft's largest customers have not signed up for a new software licensing program that represents an important revenue stream for the company. According to surveys by two research groups, Gartner and Giga Information Group, one-third of businesses contacted said they do not intend to sign up for the subscriptionlike software program, and another one-third of businesses said they are undecided. Most of this latter group are expected to go with the program, the market researchers concluded. To be sure, customers still have two months to sign up, leaving plenty of time for hesitant businesses to get with the program. Still, the sign-up rate does not reflect overwhelming support. | ||

And of course, ZDNet is there to catch all of the MS misery!
Seeing as how ZDNet has an anti-ms agenda, I would fathom a guess to say that this probably really isn't a big story and that ZDNet is blowing it way out of proportion to further their agenda. |

#3 - You should read ZDNet more often.
Personally I think this license program is dumb, and I like the fact that the customers are balking at it. What this means is that Microsoft will change the program, proving once again that having a monopoly doesn't mean you can force customer compliance. BTW, I know the large company I work for signed up and we actually were able to negotiate a very good price. |

#10 - don't work for GE. But you are right, the size of the company does have signifigant leverage. Personally I think Microsoft should just lower their prices by half and make everybody happy.

One thing here. While it's certainly tough that MS has to resort to this, I understand their need.
MS is sick and tired of people running Windows 95 in 2002 and complaining about how Microsoft software is so unstable. It's SEVEN FRIGGIN YEARS LATER. The software has come a long, long way. Besides, in the end, it will end up costing everyone less because MS has to spend a huge amount of time, effort, and money in maintaining previous versions of their OS like NT 4 now. Discovering, fixing, testing, and distributing patches isn't cheap. The world would be a much better place if everyone dumped NT and went to Win2K or Win.NET. I wouldn't be suprised if you told me there are some people still running NT 3.51. MS doesn't want to be an IBM where there software has run for 20 years without upgrade. This is neither profitable from a sales perspective, nor efficient from a support perspective. Perhaps if MS made more of an effort to make the upgrades seamless and easy, people wouldn't have such a problem upgrading. |

#16 - You must be fairly young, or new to the computing field.
#17 - I can't. But then DOS was very simple and hardly did anything. To get any real work done you had to load a all kinds of TSRs and such... which inevitably caused the system to be unstable. Or more frequent, used all the memory so that you couldn't load your main apps. |

To use your Car example, there probably isn't a single car produced that ships without some problems. To remedy this, auto makers issue recalls (which are equivalent to software patches). After the recall is issued (patch released), it is up to the owner (user) to get the problem fixed.
