10 years ago today, Microsoft promised to build "the next generation Internet." The occasion was Forum 2000, where Microsoft's Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer announced.NET, now one of the most popular frameworks used by software developers. .NET seems like it has been around forever now, but on June 22, 2000, Ballmer mentioned the word ".NET" a whopping 62 times in his keynote address as he made his case to software developers. "What is .NET?" Ballmer said. ".NET represents a set, an environment, a programming infrastructure that supports the next generation of the Internet as a platform. ... It is also, though, and Bill [Gates] made the analogy, I think, with Windows here pretty well for its day, .NET is also a user environment, a set of fundamental user services that live on the client, in the server, in the cloud, that are consistent with and build off that programming model. So, it's both a user experience and a set of developer experiences, that's the conceptual description of what is .NET." | ||

| #2: Perhaps you're unaware that new versions and updates to current/old versions happen all the time? Didn't .NET 4.0 come out a month or two ago? Isn't there an update to .NET 3.5 SP1 this month? |

| Obviously and like most other dependencies, it's a one-time install. And also, in most cases, it's not required to update .NET versions in order to use them. So lets not pretend it's such a big effort. |

#5: I figure that .NET 1.1 through 3.5 total over 420-MB of installation files. 100-MB is moronic only in being a low-ball figure. The download installation for .NET 4 is about 50-MB. After installing it will balloon substantially.
I am curious at to why #1's comments appear to be moronic to you. If you can explain using words that are educational and non-insulting kindly do so. |

#7, we install the framework once so we can run innumerable distributed applications that are tiny - rather than having to continually install and update numerous desktop applications.
The distributed applications, under the frameworks allow us to write managed code easily and with great flexibility, but with tools that allow that code to run very close to the metal - regardless of what languages we know, or are known by the people we hire. .NET is awesome and as it has evolved, has become very powerful. Federations of distributed systems and applications means that I can ship transactions up into the cloud to cover peak periods (Azure) and save massive amounts of dollars by maintaining smaller, lower cost customer premises equipment. Creating these lower cost hybrid solutions under .NET means that many posting here have a very rich and viable future implementing and managing these solutions that are vastly more powerful and useful than the best solutions were even a short few years ago. |

| #6 as #7 said. You only install it once, like I already stated. If we can all stop pretending that it's such a big effort, then we'd realise that .NET Frameworks is the same as any other dependancy - you would only need to install it ONCE if an application you're installing requires it - and it's not really a problem with Windows Vista and 7, seeing as the former already has versions 1-3 built in and the latter has versions 1-3.5 built in. |

#6: It's like saying we’ve been installing huge Office applications for years but have produced nothing but 200k documents and spreadsheets ever since.
I've also installed JAVA and Flash innumerable times but that's the price I pay if I want certain functionality. Hell, let's take it down to the individual app level - That damn Firefox keeps installing bug fixes and enhancements and all we have to show for it is a window to the world.
