PC makers no longer allowed to preinstall Windows XP on new netbooks as of October | |

Before Windows 7 launched, there was a lot of consternation about when Microsoft planned to cut off the supply of Windows XP to netbook makers. This week, Microsoft officials reminded customers and partners of that deadline date – October 22, 2010. As of that date, “OEMs will no longer be able to pre-install Windows XP Home on new netbook PCs,” Microsoft officials said. (Microsoft announced this cutoff date back in 2008, when Microsoft called netbooks ultra-low-cost PCs, or ULPCs) | ||

While I hate the MS control aspects of all this...
XP can't DIE DIE DIE fast enough! Vista is gone. That abortion is over with. Win7 works, and is the real thing. TIME TO MOVE ON. |

| I never had any problems with Vista, but that was strictly as a home user. My company is still on XP. |

Still using Vista. Still having no problems.
But yes, XP can die. 7 is amazing... I just need to find the time to upgrade my work box. |

Netbooks with XP are malware and rogue program magnets when used by kids whose parents think said kids actually understand computing enough to be trusted. These parents suddenly appreciate XP's Guest account, which the kid didn't know existed, after the malware is removed from the young master's machine.
Mr. Humpty: 7 is nice but it is far from amazing. It does not do foot massages. It can be botched by users, not as thorougly as XP. A very dumb feature of 7 is the default lower level UAC. A very nice feature is replacing a failed motherboard with a completely different model. but with a similar chipset, tends to work very well with no XP-type repair install needed, just reacivation within 3 days. Kudos to MS for this. |

Bob,
I think this is also less of a problem these days because the HAL has stabilized. No more PIC, APIC, etc... mixtures of machines out there. We are just about to retire the last of our PIC machines thank goodness. One more set of Images that can go away forever. |
