Microsoft warns against using 64-bit Office 2010
Time: 00:37 EST/05:37 GMT | News Source: *Linked Within Post* | Posted By: Kenneth van Surksum

Microsoft is advising its customers to install the 32-bit, rather than the 64-bit, version of Office 2010.

The advice is tucked away in an FAQ about the Office 2010 Tech Guarantee programme, which will ensure that buyers of Office 2007 will get a free upgrade to the new Office suite when its launched.

Yes, if you run 32 bit add-ons for Office. I see this as doing right by the customers with 32 bit add-ons installed.

I don't think Microsoft are warning peole against using 64-bit Office 2010 (especially as it's hidden in a FAQ) but more advising that there's no point in using it unless you specifically need it (e.g. for large spreadsheets, etc. which would normally run into limits on the 32-bit version).

From the Office 2010 document: "There may be technical issues with the 64-bit version". Since it seems to be a not-ready-for-prime-time product why even release it until the issues are resolved? This type of activity by Microsoft puzzles me.

#4 By 95132 (96.25.183.211) at 3/10/2010 9:47:07 PM
#3 - So you and I can be there testers and find the remaining bugs and gotch's in it so it's actually ready for prime time come 2012. I gotta admit this advice comes off as they themselves sort saying 64-office... "use at your own risk - your likely to hit some snags".

#5 By 2201 (83.244.234.228) at 3/11/2010 4:05:15 AM
#3 #4 cos the technical issues aren't anything to do with whether it has bugs, it's to do with the fact that the add-ons available right now are mostly 32-bit, which won't work in this version. By releasing it, they get it out there and developers can develop 64-bit add-ons. That's why they are releasing it, because otherwise it'd be a catch-22 situation.

64 bit Office is badly needed in many professions. Massive spreadsheets are a lot more common than many think and rather than segmenting them as many now have to, 64 bit Office will allow them to create and manage much larger sheets. Few professionals I know of pepper Office with add-ons. Online pundits season Office with all sorts of stuff - most of them trying to do basic things like connect to or integrate third party email, contacts and calendars.

Most business professionals have business services on Exchange 2003, or 2007 and they have no need for such things, or it is simply inappropriate for them to use them at work.

#5, is also dead on and guys like Paul Thurrott and Leo Laporte that dump all over 64 bit Office are as wrong about that product as they were to write Microsoft off as irrelevant in the mobile phone space or mobile entertainment - the guys no sooner write them off and MS comes out with Windows Phone 7 Series and follows up with XNA 4.0. It's just sad. They'll scramble to embrace 64 bit Office soon - just as they are now trying to back pedal on mobile. MJ got sucked into that BS, too - right about the time they **it all over Bob - right up until they catch a glimpse of the new Awin 3.0. We'll just let the work speak for itself...and yeah, some things really are worth the wait. Pfft <spit> (that was for you, Bob :) )

#6: Although I agree with your assessment of 64-Bit office, I believe users are getting nuts about data. What the hell does anyone need with 100,000 rows of data? There are sooo many Business Intelligence applications available that could slice, dice and aggregate this data and make it more useful upon delivery. Business users should be getting the finished, polished product. It reminds me of my days in the print room working with IBM 3800 printers; users would print out stacks and stacks of paper and only look at a couple of pages.

#7: I tend to agree with you; after a certain point I would use Access instead of Excel.

#7 "What the hell does anyone need with 100,000 rows of data?"
Walk into any investment bank, any managed fund broker etc etc and you will find thousands of examples of huge spreadsheet. Analysts modeling companies in Excel, sector analysis/performance/comparisons and it just goes on and on. 100,000 rows of data is dead easy to hit once you start looking beyond a small sector in one region and expand out to an entire market or a global sector. Add to that at least 10 years worth of history for even small models and you understand very quickly why those users are crying out for larger limits in Excel. Prior to Office 2007 they used to have to split up data between several spreadsheets and then have IT write complicated macros to analyze the data between them. These are guys who are all visual - they know the numbers, they know if something is off and they need to have the ability to tinker with the data, their underlying formulas etc right there and then. For better or worse, Excel is the standard for this type of work and there's absolutely no chance whatsoever of getting these guys onto Access or SQL Server etc. Because whilst many of the calculations will be performed by an external system (real time calculation engine etc.) the final data will be dumped into excel for verification and final touches.

Having said that they will abuse the 64bit versions to no end... but.. ehh! what can you do :)

#9, Bravo! Exactly that sort of thing and no matter how cool, powerful or easy we make manipulating data via (I am proud to say) killer custom applications supporting OLAP/OPLAP-T processing, end users STILL want their Excel. They like the control and they always have questions of data that no amount of effort seems to ever address.

Shoot.. getting them to embrace Excel 2007 was a major miracle and took years!

Fritz, Access has its own very terrible limitations.

#11 By 28801 (65.90.202.10) at 3/12/2010 12:03:19 PM
#9: Do they look at every row of data? No! And they shouldn't need to. If done properly, that amount of detail should not be needed. High level analytics should be able to show where problems are and provide capability to drill down to the detailed problem elements (a few hundred rows vs a few hundred thousand).

To your point, there are exceptions like the bean counters, but even they would benefit from a preliminary high level view providing key performance indicators and the ability do dive right to the problem records rather than sifting through a million plus rows. After all, do you want your Broker modeling your investment strategy in Excel? Didn't think so.

My point is that there are scads of tools that do these specific things better than Excel in both the BI industry and in modeling.

#10 We experienced the exact same push back from users when it came to Excel 2007... there were only two divisions that lept on Excel 2007 simply because it allowed them to load and manipulate their large datasets in a single spreadsheet.

#11 Oh I agree with you - there are tools that do those things much better than Excel... but... it's not what the users are used to, its not what the users understand etc - users like the feeling of "control" over their data, regardless of the fact that their control is mostly smoke and mirrors at the best of times. And getting them to change, as Lloyd gave an example with 2007, is no small feat! We had exactly the same issues and in fact we run a mix of 2003 and 2007 apps depending on which division you're in and what your role requires simply because change, whilst a good thing, is hard!

"Do they look at every row of data? No!"
No they don't with the exception (and it really is an exception) that really do understand the data at that fine a level and need to understand it because they happen to be doing things like microstrategy.

"After all, do you want your Broker modeling your investment strategy in Excel? Didn't think so."
hehe - i think you'd be surprised just how many do exactly this - very very successfully! You might even be surprised to know that many algo trading platforms are fed data by the sales traders directly from excel spreadsheets. The process from then on is completely automated and logged as it needs to be but the input is handled by their own processes which in many cases include Excel (of course in this case they don't need a 64bit version of Excel - and Excel isn't the right tool for the job either - but it's what some of the guys are familiar with and is most flexible for the way that they have learnt and experienced for 5, 10, 15 years).

#13 By 2960 (72.205.26.164) at 3/15/2010 4:15:05 PM
Excel is very commonly abused and put into service as a database. Mainly because people understand it. Rows and columns.

Data Base files are essentially the same, but it doesn't have that visual effect that excel has.

Back when the 8192 row limit was removed, all hell broke loose LOL

It doesn't help that Access is a truly AWFUL product. It is not user friendly at all, and most people do not have the time to learn it only to constantly run up against limitations.

Not to mention it's output is just plain ass-ugly. Looks like a business print from 1970 IMHO.

Thank heavens for FileMaker Pro.
