Do Windows users trust Microsoft to keep them safe? Seems the answer is | |

If last week’s BlkSoD (Black Screen of Death) FUD-fest has taught us anything, it’s that there are a lot of Windows users out there who view both Microsoft and the whole Patch Tuesday/Automatic Update mechanism with a great deal of suspicion. It seems that when PCs go wrong, people are quick to point the finger of blame at Microsoft and any updates sent their way down the Automatic Update pipes. | ||

| The title link doesn't work, kind souls. If I may comment purely on the title above, I suspect that the level of trust in Microsoft depends on ones mood at the time of answering the question and also how carefully they themselves control their own machines. |

Yes Link is done broke.
FUD plays quite a role in MS trust. If you ask most who don't trust them for valid reasons why most can't give you specifics. It's usually a regurgitation of CNet headlines. Those same people, when you challenge them if they take proper security precautions (operate as users not admins or leave the UAC active), usually laugh and say "Yea I know I should but it's just a pita to have to enter in that password when I install stuff." People should spend more time not trusting themselves to be careful on their machines and less not trusting that it is in Microsoft's best interests to keep them secure and happy. |

Trust "them" or trust that with their software and tools and the recommended layers of systems under the administration of competent engineers, one may provide a reasonable certainty that information systems will be kept safer?
Where absolute security is required, information systems are closed and not open to the public networks and subject to a host of procedural controls and then, and only then may a reasonable period of security be provided. Where reasonable levels of security may be provided, one may expect a reasonable level of assurance that information may be kept more secure, but to suppose that any single company can keep information systems safe is unrealistic. Expectations have to be aligned and personal/individual understanding of the same is far more important than most of what Microsoft can do. It's like how one drives and where and when that matters as much as whether a car is safer than some other car. |
