Taiwan: MS may have violated trade laws | |

The Taiwanese government has launched an investigation into allegations that Microsoft misused its market dominance by indiscriminately increasing prices. A taskforce, formed under Taiwan's Fair Trade Commission (FTC), will take at least six months to decide if action should be taken against Microsoft. Established in 1992, the FTC is charged with drafting fair trade policy, laws and regulations, and investigating and handling various acts impeding competition such as monopolies, mergers, concerted actions, and other restraints on competition or unfair competitive practices by enterprises. FTC's action originated from complaints by existing Microsoft corporate users, which claimed Microsoft had forced them to start using an enterprise package by August, the China Post reported. | ||

Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha... People should really read this. You guys thought the Antitrust case was bad... or that the EU might pump MS for some cash... or that the civil cases and class action suitsd would keep MS in court forever. Check this out:
"Under a trade ruling, a company head could be imprisoned for up to three years or face a maximum fine of NT$100 million (US$3 million) if his firm is found guilty of misusing its market leadership. #3--you break the law, you are responsible for it... changing your practices after the fact doesn't prevent you from being prosecuted. Changing anything now will have no effect on whether or not this case is pursued. People have such simpleminded perceptions of things, I'm amazed.
And fine, if MS wants to pull the copies for sale, yes, piracy will resurge and MS will make no money in a great market. Taiwan is attempting to be a 1st world, good corporate citizen and they are doing a great job cutting down on piracy. In one fell swoop, MS changes all that--you really got me beat there. Fool. |

Sodajerk, Bill and Steve will be going nowhere. I believe the jail time would be for whomever is in charge of MS Taiwan (assuming they even have a case, and can't pay a measily $3 million fine).
<sarcasm> And how dare Microsoft charge educational institutions. </sarcasm> Give me a break. |

| What #9 is proposing is closer to the DOJ settlement that the non-settling states are currently fighting. |
