While smartbook PCs based on ARM processors will be launched in 2010, Microsoft will continue with its strategic cooperation with Intel and will not have Windows 7 support smartbook PCs for the time being, according to Microsoft corporate vice president Mike Nash for Windows Platform Strategy during an interview with Digitimes. | ||

The key concepts to take from this...
1) Not Yet for the NT kernel - but this will be the long range goal. 2) WinCE is still advancing and has one final good shove before #1 happens. WinMo 7 will be that generation of technology on the CE kernel. So NT is a bit too advanced to devote the time at this point. (OS X on the iPhone is not a good comparison, as it is a less functional kernel than WinCE and far from the client/server layering concepts of the NT kernel.) Also WinCE is still fairly advanced and can support another generation for streamlined device performance with a very basic kernel technology inspired by NT, but without the subsystem and extra kernel API layers that are just not needed. WinCE has had security and been a strong pre-emptive multiasking 32bit OS for over 10 years, offering features the OS X iPhone kernel version doesn't even have yet. |

I still fail to see why anyone would want to run a full desktop OS on ARM architecture. My understanding is the ARM architecure is great for low power, small form factor devices, not the kind of thing I would want to run full Windows, OS/X or Linux on.
Yes I know the I-Phone is OS/X lite and there are ARM ports for Linux but these are not the full blown desktop versions. |
