MS in Peruvian open-source nightmare | |

There's a letter circulating, purportedly from Peruvian Congressman David Villanueva Nuñez to Microsoft Peru, which cuts the heart out of Redmond's chief 'panic points' to chill those considering open-source migration. Apparently, the Peruvian government is considering a bill mandating open-source software for all public bureaux. From the congressman's letter, we gather that MS had circulated a FUD communiqué calculated to frighten world + dog with images of collapsing domestic software markets, spiraling costs and systems migration nightmares. Villanueva Nuñez slices and dices with great skill to reveal the internal inconsistencies, unsupportable claims and irrational conclusions which the MS flacks trade in. | ||

I suspect this has mostly to do with anti-US attitudes. Microsoft is not a Peruvian company, so let's stick it to them.
Unfortunately the arguments put forth by the Peruvians are the typical communist stuff. Software should be free, take from those who have to give to those who need, etc. What they fail to address is what is needed to build a software industry within their own country. Unfortunately the very thing they attack against the US is the very same thing they will need to protect their own nation's companies. C'est la vie. Thus another third world nation takes an important step to keep their govt important at the expense of the people... |

None of the companies trying your strategy seem to be doing very well. Give em a hand! "Your communists line is just sad. Joe McCartjy would be proud of you fighting for the rights of Microsoft to continue breaking the law, but in an "American" way." Ironically, the communist party in Peru is very strong. But that's beside the point. Did Microsoft break the law? I'm not convinced of that... at least not to the extent people like you claim. But even if they did, just because something is the *law* doesn't make it American. The United States has plenty of VERY un-American laws. Don't get me started... "I cant think of anything more Un-American then one company holding everyone hostage." Ya, and if Microsoft were holding a gun to your head, forcing you to buy Windows, I would agree with you whole heartedly. The fact is, Microsoft *never* forced *anybody* to do anything... unless Bill is hiring thugs to come to your house to check up on your computer usage. No, what's un-American is to use the government to crush your competitors. What's un-American is to use the government as a weapon when you can't compete. "I also like you how you say the people will suffer.....yea what because they wont have to pay thousands of dollars for an operating system?" Man, what OS are you using? I paid 50 bucks for my copy of Windows XP, and I like it very much. (Rebates are a wonderful thing.) Personally, I think 50 bucks ain't a bad price to pay for something as complex as an OS. "Microsofts attempts to crush linux and opensource have failed and they are just making themselves look more foolish trying to attempt to discredit them." Well, I'm not sure how you measure success and failure. Considering Linux holds less than 3% OS market share (and almost certainly not that much), and isn't used for very many high end server applications, I would say Microsoft has done fairly well. But Linux has its uses, and this is America, so feel *free* to use it. But it's not very hard to "discredit" open source and Linux. They have basically nothing backing up their many claims. They say they are more secure, yet they experience as many (if not more) security vulnerabilities as closed source systems. They say they are cheaper, but the TCO is almost always much higher. But perhaps I shouldn't confuse you with the facts; your mind is already made up, right? "The only reason M$ does not like about Linux is the fact that they cant buy them out or crush them outright." Name a single company that Microsoft has conducted a hostile take over of. I'll give you a hint: they've never done so. The companies that Microsoft buys are more than happy to get bought, since they become millionaires. So your "crush" analogy probably isn't very accurate. On the other hand, all the open source companies put together could be bought with Gates' pocket change... so maybe you have a point. "Its ironic isnt it that M$ is losing to a product that is free and they have no control over?" Losing? Uh huh. "Sorry but the M$ ship has sailed and everyone is jumping ship to avoid there choke hold." Actually, I'm sitting on the deck, drinking a Pina Colada, getting a sun tan. Enjoy your swim. |

| #8 Maybe you should offer your so high analysis skills to some investments companies like Merryll Linch because the majority of the financial analysts rate MS a strong buy. Btw IMO the MS economic model is extremely good. |

#10, and MS has over $40 billion in liquid assets, there is a BIG difference between Enron and MS.
Actually, MS has always been very straightforward with their finances, and very conservative with their outlooks for future quarters. And if you really want a read on MS from an financial standpoint, CNN recently wrote up a big paper on them. But anything to bash MS, right? |

Three Letters... R...M...S... Stallman has been very consistent in this. All software should be free. "Your communists line is just sad." How so? If it's an accurate statement, then so be it. I attacked the arguments, not the person, can you not do the same? Reading through this letter it is clear well reasoned Communist crap. Microsoft pointed out how the bill runs counter to creating an economy for software, and the response to every one of these points is "We do not place this limit on private enterprise. Only the govt purchases, and any company is free to adopt these provisions and thus sell to us." This indicates a fundamental lack of understanding of macro economics, but it sounds resonable to the populist attitudes... which is what Communism is mostly about. |
