Believe it or not, Windows 7's successor(s) have been in the planning and early development stages for a while now. We haven't posted anything about any of them yet, but we've been watching closely to see if anything really interesting turned up. Exactly two weeks ago, it did. A LinkedIn profile, which has already been taken down, for a Robert Morgan, Senior Research & Development at Microsoft, has shone a sliver of light on the possibility of 128-bit support coming to Windows 8. | ||

| As discussed here http://msftkitchen.com/2009/10/exclusive-windows-8-and-windows-9-kernals-to-support-128-bit-architecture.html#comments, it is exceptionally unlikely he’s talking about 128-bit memory addressability (even though it does say IA-128... interesting). We’re so far off from the limits of the 64-bit memory space hardware-wise (think of the number of memory sticks!)… heck, NTFS itself is only 64-bit (theoretical), and we’re not really pushing that limit yet. My guess is that he’s talking about the 128-bit *FPU* in AMD’s coming “Bulldozer” processors: http://www.brightsideofnews.com/news/2009/4/15/amds-next-gen-bulldozer-is-a-128-bit-crunching-monster.aspx. |
