10 Must-Have Applications on Windows 7 Launch Day | |

Microsoft's Windows 7 launch is just three weeks away. It might seem like a long time to some, but for the rest of us, the time has come to prepare for the new operating system. Part of that preparation involves determining what software we should install to augment the experience. Everything from security software to fun, photo-editing tools should make that list. But picking them can be difficult. How do we know which music application to choose? Which video-editing application is ideal for the new Windows 7? Answering those questions might be more difficult than we think. That's precisely why we here at eWEEK have compiled our own list. We want to help you make those tough choices. | ||

Whoever made that list is an idiot. Those are not must have applications. Well, not all of them. iTunes is not a must have application. Even if you do have an iPod, its STILL not a must have because you can use other tools to sync your music. Microsoft Security AND AVG? Why would I need both? You only need one or the other. Google Chrome? Pass. Google Desktop? Pass. Adobe Photoshop? This could only be considered a must have to artists. Adobe Premiere Elements? Nope, unless you're REALLY into video editing. Tweak-7? Only for the computer geeks.
Must have applications need to be things that everyone needs to use. Whether they are geeks, computer illiterate parents, or anyone in between. This is a list of "10 applications you might be interested in" and nothing more. |

Agreed. There are much better free must haves than this paid advertisement from eWeek. I will spare you my choices, but they are all free!

Thanks for agreeing. Only the Microsoft Security OR AVG is a must have from that list. They're both free and both do what they need to do. Avira is still probably the better choice, but the two would do fine in most cases. |

Agreed, anyone that even considers this list as 'reasonable' is either misinformed or insane.
It is like the author is trying to give users the worst Win7 experience as possible. The only applications I recommend out of this list is AVG OR MSE and MS Office, the rest are not only BAD, but borderline Malware. For Example, iTunes - great if you an iPod, if you don't, it is spyware. People don't realize that iTunes if allowed to 'see all your media' it will 'catalog' everything it adds to its library computer and then sends the results back to Apple. (This is where a lot of the ISP notifications of illegal content on people's drives comes from. As Apple notes anything that looks like it is 'suspicious' - even a DVD you burned yourself to your computer, and then passes that information along so that the copywright owners can send nice letters to ISPs.) Google Desktop? Holy cow of horrible. Not only is the performance of the Win7 search system 10x faster, but do people realize that Google Desktop also reports information about your 'local' files to Google so that they can create better advertising marketing for you when you browse the web? That is serious privacy concerns. Also the Encryption software? Really? If people need that level of protection, they should be buying the Ultimate version of Win7 and using Bitlocker and VHD mounting - this is all stuff built into the OS, and is MORE SECURE. (For general users, the professional version with NTFS based file encryption is even more secure and transparent and works flawlessly.) Geesh, and holy Geesh... ActiveWin needs to put a disclaimer on 'crap' like this. |

If I'm not mistaken, MSE and AVG provide overlapping protection. MSE doesn't do viruses, and AVG doesn't do malware/rootkits. They compliment each other.

| IMHO, everything is crap compared to NOD32. |
