IBM: Let Sun into Web services group | |

Big Blue changes its tune and starts arguing that rival Sun should be drafted as a key member of a new Web services standards body. What will Microsoft make of that? In an about-face, IBM is paving the way for rival Sun Microsystems to join a key Web services standards organization, hoping to quell political infighting that could put a damper on the emerging technology. At issue is a three-month old industry consortium, called the Web Services Interoperability Organization (WS-I), that aims to promote Web services by ensuring software from various technology makers is compatible. Sun has in the past accused IBM and Microsoft, co-founders of the organization, of engaging in "political shenanigans" for not allowing Sun to join as an equal partner. Sun in February was invited to join as a "contributing" member, but has ignored the invitation, campaigning instead for more influential "founding board member" status, so it can help set the group's agenda. | ||

Sigh.
Sun has resisted XML Web Services since day 1, mostly because it was backed by Microsoft. Now they realize they're screwed, and are making some last ditch efforts to catch up. Personally, I hope Microsoft accepts their pathetic plea. It will show who is the "bigger" of the two. |

WebMethods is more deserving of admission than Sun and few have ever heard of them. Sun has been fighting this idea of web services since it was first envisioned because it doesn't match up with their Java-Everywhere vision.

Sun can join as a member... And when they prove they have something valuable to contribute then maybe the board can reconsider their position.
But up until now, Sun has been anything *BUT* a founding member. |

What has Sun done to deserve founding member status?
They resisted and rejected web services as long as they possibly could, and only have they realized the entire industry was against them, did they start to reluctantly adopt the technology. Now they are pretending they were in on the ground floor? I'm sorry... who invented SOAP? Microsoft. Who was the first big player to push XML? Microsoft. Who has spent billions to create a massive framework dedicated to Web Services? Microsoft. What the hell has Sun done? Nothing. |
