Microsoft wants people to throw Windows 7 launch parties | |

A new version of Windows is not typically a reason to throw a party, but Microsoft is hoping people will do just that to celebrate Windows 7, and has teamed with House Party to help them do so. Through a House Party promotional Web site, people can apply to throw a Windows 7 launch party any time between Oct. 22 and Oct. 29. Microsoft is releasing Windows 7 globally on Oct. 22. "You host the party. We'll bring the favors," Microsoft declared on the site calling for applications. House Party is a community-based site that helps people around the world host parties that are usually held on the same day and are focused on a corporate event or product launch. | ||

| I find this to be awesome and a great promotion. Instead of just releasing the OS, they are doing things to make it fun. And there is nothing wrong with that. |

#2: Everyone loves a good party, but what the heck do you do at a launch party? Stand around and talk about Windows? Break out the Microsoft edition of Twister (with the faces of Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer an Clippy)? Huddle around the PC and watch it install 7, and then pop the champagne when it first boots? Anagrams ("William H. Gates.... um, Salami We Light!")?

Dude, at our last SQL Server Launch party we had chicks, and celebrities and strippers and 27 different kinds of Micro Brews. The conversation was rockin' with inner joins and strored procedures. It was awsome. |

Does MS plan to throw in the "chicks, celebrities and strippers"? Hey, count me in! I'll bet MS can afford the best. On the other hand an OSS party would probably be pretty skanky. |

We'll have an open house at our offices and while not a launch party per se, we will have a lot of our 7 builds up and running in several areas. we give away prizes and customers get to meet one another and a lot of the people behind the solutions we build. It draws a big crowd and there is a lot of good food and a lot of fun. we have demos around a theme of "how we work and play" it attracts a lot of gamers as well as business people of every type.
This year will have a drawing for a custom system called 7 on 7 - Core i7 on Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Dual SSD's, 12 GB 1600 DDR3 and a BFG 295 GTX. Super multi-blu LG drive, media reader and 2 TB of storage round it out. We'll also give away 10 Zune HD's steep discounts on hardware built for 7. We have a lounge area that is a of fun with a "ride the light" experience where people get to feel the what it is like to ride our network. That experience changes what people understand is possible. Nothing quite like pulling on sites at close to 100 MB/sec (for those few test sites that can handle it). While we don't have games per se, there is a lot of PC gaming. Xbox 360 gaming is also available, but not emphasized over its media capabilities. Many customers like to show off their kit that we have developed for them and we have several key software and site launches planned - including one that may be of interest to readers here. We will be among those featured around the MS event, but we'd have the open house regardless. It's a lot of fun and this year's emphasis will be on doing so much without a shred of government stinking up the joint - by simply ignoring the fools. |

The company I work for through a party to launch a new part were making for GM.
Everybody wanted biscuits and sausage gravy for the main meal "and we got it" unfortunately the sausage went bad and almost everybody ended up with raging diarrhea including our President and VP. Not all parties are fun and games. |

No problem with a Launch party, but Microsoft wanting others to do it and pay for it is pathetic.
Why don't they just do another "Windows 95" Start-Me-Up thing? |

TL, actually, launch parties of this sort are nothing new at all for corporations and organizations of many types and are only an extension of programs managed by companies whose business it is to deliver this sort of service. houseparty.com is the channel being used for this event - but for many others, too... Ford Motor Company, etc...
Organizing for such events is a bit harder than many people realize. I recall when we held our first open house. We had no idea it would end up being as big a deal as it was. A lot more people came than we had anticipated and to say the least, we were naive. I would not make too big a deal about this effort - the company is just trying to provide some free tools and enable a more consistent message. If you recall all the small Firefox launch parties, which were as much driven by negative motivations (e.g., anti IE and ant-Microsoft, as much as they were pro-FF/Moz). It's interesting to me in the context that the "anti" side of it was emphasized - rather than the pro/positive side of thing (like their own product, which proved to be no more secure than any other software and as browsers go, less so). I do like that there is no anti-this-or-that side of this. A lot is coming that is new - not just the client and it is high time we all turned away from a lot of negative energy and started working on the things that do work and are getting better. Outside our industry it's hard to get all jazzed up about a new OS, but inside the channel the totality of new releases is pretty exciting. Those that have busted tail and continued to look forward as opposed to clinging to XP and complaining are going to be better prepared to leverage new possibilities. The ability to paint Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 with the same tired old XP/IE 6/IIS 5 brush is long past. Those in the channel that have pushed on are probably the kinds of companies that people want to work with any way... I mean... who wants to work with a Debbie, or Don the Downer all the time???? I sure don't. |

| I like Latch's idea.... I've actually signed up for this as there are a number of people that I work and socialize with that use me as a tech resource. Currently running the Win 7 RC, which is extremely stable and runs every application that I've tossed at it. It also makes for a great networking opportunity for those of us that work in the tech community. |

This made me laugh (from Slashdot):
"I think the hosts should charge their guests $100 to come in. Then just before serving drinks, the host springs a EULA that the guest needs to sign, or else he gets booted out the front door. If the party is on a Tuesday, then in the middle of their festivities they need to sit still for half and hour while ADP comes in and upgrades the security system. I just pity the poor guest who only paid the basic $100 to get in. The bathroom is only available to those who paid $299 to get in. Poor schmucks." |
