If the students have a functional computer that will provide them with what they need or can borrow one for a while they should wait until October (Oct. 22 launch date) when Windows 7 (W7) is officially released. Almost all current machines run Vista an OS which I have found wanting. My testing of Windows 7 over the last six months reveals that W7 is a good fix of Vista shortcomings and worth having.
If a student must have a new computer for September they should make sure they can upgrade the computer to W7 (Windows 7 is less demanding than Vista generally but still requires high-end graphics hardware to work to full potential). Microsoft will offer free upgrades through a download using an access key. If the retailer does not offer the W7 upgrade and will not provide it in writing, go somewhere else.
