I don't know, that's going to great lengths to making a fake...
I think they are probably very real.

Honestly, why would anyone take the time and the countless hours of programming to make a fake video that will only last on the market for under 4months? Who would care to and what would be the point--please tell me(I really want to know). I think all of these videos come from Microsoft, when they were older Windows 2000 builds or early Windows Neptune builds, or quite possibly longhorn concepts. I mean I can understanding faking a picture-and I have seen them(alot of them), but video! I've tried to do it using powerpoint and the movie maker and you can do it to a certain extent(but not nearly as good in the videos) but these videos seem to be just too well produced.

They do seam pretty well produced, but remember when the Office NGO came out and they sent the letters asking them to be taken down? I haven't heard of any of that yet. Maybe they figure that will confirm people suspecions. I wonder if we will ever know if these are real or not, since even if they were produced at MS they very well might go another direction. It will be fun to watch though:)

CPU, Zeo, I don't have an opinion one way or the other, nor do I care--but to dismiss the idea it's a fake because it seems time consuming and difficult is really off base. You guys clearly aren't invovled in graphic design--it would be easy to build these "videos" in Flash or Director, and you wouldn't know it. The quality and skills of the faker would be a factor--but I would say this could be a short amount of time (say 10 hours) to a long time. And I wouldn't even say that a skilled, intelligent person is above wasting 100 hours faking something like this.

Once in a while I agree with you Sodajerk! Someone with the right knowledge could make these video quickly but what is puzzling me is the reason for the poor quality of the images. I mean it seems like someone shot the movie during a presentation of whatever this stuff is. Now if this is the case the movie, besides whatever was the subject is "real", if not the people who made them were smart enough to simulate the effect of a movie taken in a sneaky way. Could it be techically speacking possible?

Most of the quality issues are arising based on the size and how the file was encoded. I'm not seeing anything to suggest this was captured with a camera--shadows, glares, distortion around the edges. No, if this is real, it would definitely have been captured from an image capture program.
On the other hand--the fact that we are just getting these tiny little files suggests to me--FAKE. If it was a real windows file at one point, why is the person who has it making it an inch and a half wide. MS has no reason to create a video file that small of a presentation; whereas a faker has all the motivatin in the world to hide the flaws in his product--hence, the miniscule size and low quality.

Again, I just want to know or hear ideas about what the point would be of making one of these "faked" videos?
If it showed some kill Application then I would understand, but I think that MS would put that out **by accident** to build hype,
But these videos show no such thing. -{They are probably internal testing material}
Aditionally, if it showed some new interface then I could understand making a fake video, because it would throw a loop at the community. But we've seen this already from MS(the financial meeting video) and it isn't that exteremly different.
If anyone wants to see some really good concepts for a user interface, check out what MS was thinking about for Neptune way back. [I wanted to be a link here, but someone has pulled everything from way back then, check it out http://www.zdnet.com/anchordesk/story/story_3124.html]
Am I the only one that remembers the pre XP user interface ideas?? While I didn't like all of them, they looked better than XP's current user interface(I am running XP).
Anyone remember them?? I have a picture of one of the designs sitting on a backup tape.

Sodajerk, your last point(#8) about the size issue makes sense. I agree with you for once!

It isn't a hidden camera, as it's not bouncing around, nor is it skewed as though someone were sitting at an angle to the screen. Also if you zoom in, the image of the mouse pointer does not look correct at all... Looks like the old Amiga cursor, not the more modern designs.
I think these are fake.

Well, according to Paul over at WinInformant, it's fake.
A good fake, but still a fake.

Don't forget that Longhorn is still in Alpha, heck, EARLY alpha, and so these very well could be real videos, or at the least, concept vidoes.

#18 - A trace route of your IP shows that you were posting your message from Europe, specifically Great Britian.
But Microsoft doesn't have any offices in Great Britian.
So... how is it you work for Microsoft? Are you on vacation?
*cough*

RMD, don't know, but I am sure that there is an office there, and I know for fact that there is an MSR lab there.
