Windows XP and Vista have started installing updates at shutdown, in certain cases, without displaying a warning or requesting permission, according to reports by several readers.

I've seen this myself in the last 2 weeks. I always set WU to notify me but I'll manually download and apply patches. The other day I went to hibernate and my shutdown button had the yellow shield on it. When I clicked it, my system chugged and then powered off. Not what I was expecting, but good to know that MS will override my explicit settings when it thinks it's best to do so.

#1, it is troubling and I don't like it one bit.
I don't care how anonymously they assert it to be done, it is wrong in every context and you are right to call them on it.
