Microsoft’s New Search at Bing.com Helps People Make Better Decisions | |

Microsoft Corp. today unveiled Bing, a new Decision Engine and consumer brand, providing customers with a first step in moving beyond search to help make faster, more informed decisions. Bing is specifically designed to build on the benefits of today’s search engines but begins to move beyond this experience with a new approach to user experience and intuitive tools to help customers make better decisions, focusing initially on four key vertical areas: making a purchase decision, planning a trip, researching a health condition or finding a local business. The result of this new approach is an important beginning for a new and more powerful kind of search service, which Microsoft is calling a Decision Engine, designed to empower people to gain insight and knowledge from the Web, moving more quickly to important decisions. The new service, located at http://www.Bing.com, will begin to roll out over the coming days and will be fully deployed worldwide on Wednesday, June 3. | ||

| In other words, its designed to help you part with your money. Not necessarily inform you about the world. Just another ad revenue scheme for them. |

| #1: I do not see how a search engine is designed "to help you part with your money". Like Google and Yahoo, search revenue is brought in by charging businesses that choose to advertise per click, not visitors per view. |

I think we will know how it works quite soon: let us say you search for a camera and the search results will be only the ones related to paid advertisers I am afraid that Bing will not be successfull; if it will show real deals it could be.
What I am wondering is if MS also updated the alghoritm used to perform the searches; personally, and I repeat personally, I found the one used by Google to be more accurate. The demo looks cool but real life situations are different and this is true for every company. Said that, so far, I like it. We will see.... |

It seems like things will be more expensive for users of bing... vendors have to pay to get higher rankings, and MS gets money from featured transactions, all while more independant vendors get less attention, even though their prices may be better.
They brand "bing" as a decision engine, but it really only seems to make the decision of what's most profitable for Microsoft and not what's best for the user. And the kicker is, even if you only want a money decision: what vendor will really want to be compared on equal footing with their competitors? But what if all you want is information; Won't they just be using the same search tech MS has always used? This post was edited by Mister on Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 11:45. |

I think the potential benefit is that Google makes money out of selling ads on fake websites that actually do not have real products.
So when you search on Google, most hits are crap and only there because they bribe Google. If Bing is selling ads to real companies that sell real products it will be 1000x better than Google is right now. |

| #5: Google lost the moral high ground on its "don't be evil" slogan some time ago when they legitimized the fake sites that only list ads, "spam sites" after their algorithm was adjusted to produce what they term "democratic" search results. Advanced search is better. Yahoo and Live Search produce similar results with too many sites designed to offer ads only and that like to other sites that offer ads only. Search is still wildly useful if you are more specific with what you type. |
