Windows Mobile Team Admits, Explains 6.5's Half-Assed UI (It was rushed) | |

The reason why we couldn't complete the interface on Windows Mobile 6.5 is because of time. We only spend what, eight months, nine months, to build 6.5 from ground up and it's actually an amazing engineering feat. But, in order to do that, we had to do some prioritization and we had to cut certain features. Eventually, we will make sure that the UI capabilities are carried out throughout the whole platform. | ||

| This is not new. Microsoft products all suffer from incomplete UIs. Just take a look at any version of Office. You'll see dialog boxes that look like they are carried over from earlier versions. In the case of Office 2007, some parts of the suite have the new Ribbon UI, while others do not. I've always had the feeling that the UI team just loses interest after a while. They don't even bother to follow up and update their products so that all the UI elements match. How hard can that be? |

#1, How hard can that be?
Very hard. In fact, UI design and work is painfully slow and extremely expensive. We build a lot of custom ERP solutions for customers and what we call, Decision Control Panels. We're tiny, for sure, but the costs and time associated with getting it right is extremely difficult. Good designers that also understand development are hard to find and rightfully expensive. Really good ones get spread around a lot. Now, I can only comment about what I see and pay for myself, but I can tell you, while it is worth every effort, it is very tough stuff. We never get it entirely right and have to continually go back in and correct things we ourselves don't like about our work. No matter how much attention we pay to it, we always find things that need to improve. I would say this aspect of development is the hardest to keep up with, too. |

| I've been on UI design teams before and I can say from my experience that UI design is only slow & expensive if you try and wing it as you go. UIs aren't new and are essentially evolutionary; you don't have to throw away 30 years of UI advances and start from scratch. However, you do need to sit down ahead of time and formulate a cohesive vision of what you want. Sketch it on paper, refine it on screen with some mockups and then implement. And make sure you've got an tenacious team leader with an eye for detail to play the role of continuity control. I've also seen UIs done by a team that didn't really know what it wanted, they had people with absolutely no experience with usability, and everyone had their own ideas. The UI looked like a dog's breakfast. |

yeah... we never start from the beginning, Latch... sheesh... what a character you are.
Our ERP's UI smokes all others and I mean, crushes them. Our DCP's have won awards - so stuff the left handed insults. |
