Microsoft will make "major new announcements" relating to its forthcoming Windows 7 operating system when it launches the Release Candidate of the OS, according to a British technology news site. Microsoft Windows OEM manager Laurence Painell told PC Pro that the company plans a "couple of additional, quite major announcements" at the time it releases Windows 7 RC. The Release Candidate will likely ship in May, though Microsoft has yet to formally confirm a date.

Like, maybe, shipping-only upgrade charge to Ultimate for we poor suckers who bought Vista Ultimate?

I was thinking along the same lines. I remember a couple of months ago there was a rumor to the same effect regarding Vista Ultimate - 7 Ultimate upgrades.

Maybe that existing Ultimate Extras will be updated for Windows 7? But that doesn't sound like 'major'.

What's with the fixation with Ultimate Extras? They have already said that it's not coming to "7" so it's clearly not the "major announcement" that they have said.
If you're stupid enough to buy Vista Ultimate just for the Ultimate Extras, then that's your fault. Vista Ultimate was clearly the amalgamation of all the editions and was promoted as such by Microsoft themselves (check the Wayback Machine for past versions of Microsoft's Windows site if you are not sure). Ultimate Extras was just that, extras. The only people who got confused was the gutter press, which you've (yes you #1) have clearly put way too much faith in.

I agree with you here. I bought Ultimate because i wanted domain functionality and media centre for one PC. I don't get how anyone could buy something for features when they don't even know what they will be. It is like shelling out 2000 more for a car with extra special accessories that will come in the future but will be a surprise when they show up at the door. Seems like a stupid way to spend your money.
For those that bought Ultimate for the extras I am wondering - what did you actually think the extras would be?

#4 and #5: Similis cum similibus; I bought Ultimate because of what MS announced that Edition to be.
Among other features like the ability to have Domain and Media Center together, there were also other "Extras". What these Extras were going to be had been widely detailed by MS so no jumping in the dark.

For the tech savvy (yes, I'm playing the same 'tech savvy' card as those that tossed it over Firefox (what a joke that was)), go for Ultimate for 'Secure Startup' or 'Cornerstone' (NGCSB) - interfaces are secure from the moment the PC is powered up through the entire boot process.
Oh here's another one... 'The tech savvy' also know exactly what is unique about Ultimate - over and above 'Ultimate Extras' and they made a fully informed purchasing decision. If one felt duped and truly believed that Ultimate was not worth it, a simple letter and a request for a refund would most likely have addressed their concerns and resulted in said refund.
Regardless, my bet remains that MS will provide Vista Ultimate licensees with a free copy of Windows 7 Ultimate and unlock keys to allow them access to previously installed Ultimate Extras. They'll smile, apologize sincerely and inwardly reflect on how they hope people will finally shut up about extras already.

"If you're stupid enough to buy Vista Ultimate just for the Ultimate Extras, then that's your fault."
Yeah, DAMN us consumers for expecting what was promised as an advance feature.
DAMN US!

Microsoft has only stated that NEW extras won't be provided..that's the end of the UE program, it has never said it won't update existing extras to work with Windows 7. I've been repeatedly asking Steven Sinofsky thru the E7 blog email on the status of existing extras, and he's been saying: "We've haven't yet announced anything about existing Ultimate Extras."

#13, in place upgrades disable some Windows Vista Ultimate Extras - this has the potential to hack existing Ultimate owners off even more. MS is going to have to address this, or the anger over this is going to increase.
I may be one of the few people that actually use Dreamscene on a daily basis and while third party software from Stardock is available for Win7 users to access DS, it isn't the same. I use DS as something of a meter on two workstations - as an immediate indicator of a system's health. One workstation has run it without error for over a year and is subject to extreme use. Needless to say, it takes quite a machine to sustain a feature without error that should not be that taxing, or flawed. What I'm getting at here is machine balance - how stable is it and how smooth is it.
TL, there is no way you're going to convince me that you're just a regular consumer. If you're speaking on behalf of consumers, then yes, you have a good point and all the good stuff in Ultimate that is not seen, or reported will likely be subordinated to the Ultimate Extras that many assert did not materialize in sufficient number and quality to satisfy its licensees. This is why I mention that if those same few extras are removed, Ultimate owners will see it as one more and perhaps the last affront to them in the long sad chapter of the Vista story.
I do not think Microsoft is that stupid and providing a free copy of Windows 7 Ultimate to the tiny number of people running Vista Ultimate may smooth over a lot of sore feelings. TL will still be pissed off and that is good. He is exactly the kind of very demanding customer we seek out and serve best - people who always want the most out of the best. We get that and believe me, these kind of people drive most all others - they are the innovators and perfectionists that make up 80% of my business. Crazy skilled surgeons, forensic examiners, business people with a dozen or so enterprises... we all know at least one.
