Why Microsoft doesn’t like client hypervisors | |

VMware has a server hypervisor, and VMware has announced a client hypervisor. Citrix has a server hypervisor, and Citrix has announced a client hypervisor. Microsoft has a server hypervisor, so why haven’t they announced a client hypervisor? Are they being smart, stupid, or clueless? | ||

I'm kinda torn on the Client Hypervisor. It could be really cool for normal run of the mill users though... well not cool for them but for the staff supporting them.
Personally i think MS isn't worrying about the client hyper v until it gets its own hyper v w/i striking distance of VMWare's performance. |

#1 Hyper-V and Xen outperform VMware on intensive workloads in this benchmark:
"After doing these comparisons of ESX to Hyper-V and XenServer, it's clear that at the hypervisor level, ESX is optimized for a large number of less-intensive workload VMs. For intensive workloads that may not be optimized for memory overcommit apps, Hyper-V and XenServer should definitely be considered-even if that means adding another hypervisor into the data center." http://virtualizationreview.com/features/article.aspx?editorialsid=2641 |

#2 afaik Virtual PC is the base MS started with in all of its Virtualizing offerings. Also: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/virtualpc/default.mspx
#3 I had heard different under high Disk I/O. I'm gonna look a that benchmark though. The VMWare options like hot VM xfer from one server to another plus failover etc. makes me want to build on its server and not HyperV atm. I'm sure MS will end up with those options soon they've moved pretty fast when it comes to adding options. |

#2 Microsoft VPC 2007 is alive and well. We build multiple legacy OS in VPC 2007 to test our code against to ensure it works on these "ancient" Microsoft operating systems.
#3 Until Microsoft's Hper-V has the capability to move a virtual workload from one SAN storage to another on the fly, enterprise IT will choose VMware. Even when the price difference can add up to tens of thousands of dollars. For intensive computing tasks, we use non virtualized Microsft clustering on back end databases and Citrix Netscalers for load balancing on the front end. |
