Microsoft's plans for its mobile application store just may change the way consumers look at apps and the Windows Mobile operating system. Not only has Microsoft changed contentious policies still enacted in Google and Apple's respective app stores, it has partnered with some of the most popular contemporary content providers and introduced original strategies for businesses. Here are three major reasons why I think Microsoft could blow its competition out of the water. | ||

| Won't matter how cool their app store is if their mobile OS continues to blow goats. Until I see WM7 I couldn't care less about the app store. |

| Good move on the changes they are having with their store. But as others have said - until they make a decent update to Windows Mobile I certainly won't bother with it, by the time Win Mob 7 comes out they could be over 2 generations behind, certainly in consumer phones they will be |

While I still have a problem believeing it, read what
www.pocketpcthoughts.com just posted: Quote the forthcoming Windows Mobile Marketplace is going to be for Windows Mobile 6.5 phones only, not back-ported to Windows Mobile 6.1 and 6.0 phones. Unquote If there is someone here that earns hundreds of thousands of $ per year as those "Top manager" and could explain to a mere human like me the logic behind such a move.... Fritz, it will likely have to do with the plan to allow purchases direct from the phone through either the carrier, or a credit card - with the bill through the carrier being highly desired - so as not to give up processing fees on the transaction.
I can imagine the payment processing to be quite challenging for them in technical and administrative contexts. I am however certain, that a great many will say that it is design to gouge existing customers... as if iPhone apps store did not require an iPhone and a fee applied to iTouch when it was allowed access...? While speculative, anyone who has coded up the connections from their own cart to payment gateways using their API's (First Data I am looking at you) understands at least some of the challenges and limitations. |

Personally I do not think they did it to gauge customers; it does not seem an effective strategy to reach such a goal. I am more prone to see it like another blunder in the mobile phone arena; not as big as when MS , having conquered the market with WM5, decided to halt development loosing the momentum but still an interesting one.
While I am not an Apple expert my understanding is that the Apple store works with the iPhone, the iPhone G3 and several models of Ipods although I am not 100% sure about it. Setting up a e-store that will work only with an OS...to be released in a couple of months is not something that will drive much excitement anong developers. I mean I would rather keep selling through the actual channels and targeting the entire segment of WU 6 and 6.1 users while waiting for future WU 6.5 ones. |
