By now, you’ve probably seen Microsoft’s new “Not cool enough to be a Mac person” ad. (If not, I’ve embedded it below.) On the face of it, it looks like a decent ad. It plays the one thing that will catch people’s attention in a down economy: price. But if you stop to think about it, the ad is kind of pointless, because it’s targeting people who were going to get a PC anyway. | ||

| Not writing about Apple's product placement? Not ridiculous? When there is a need to show a computer on a TV program these days, inevitably you'll find a Mac shown. Yet, no one ever comments on the absurdness of this. If you won't stop at absurdness, try, "there are no applications that run on a Mac for that profession." But, don't stop at Macs only represent only about 10% of the computer that people buy. No, that would be pointless . . . |

Frankly trying to convince someone already hellbent on buying an Apple computer is quite worthless. They do really buy into the value bs. I've worked for years with Macs and Mac users. Even back on OS 7 they would claiim superior stability and quality of their machines while quitely rebooting them every few hours after the bomb showed up.
Now on OSX there are numerous network problems and crashes under anything resembling stress on the OS (granted the latest OSX versions have gotten better). Quitely rebooting as if nothing happened. Its almost like using a Mac you learn to just purge memories from your brain that involve the OS jacking up. The hardware isn't much better either at this point. They use a brand of harddrive I would choose if building a machine but aside from that the only real amazing thing about macs is the case itself. If you put such a premium on case design (and I'm talking internally) than more power to you. Oh and my favorite is, if you talk to a Mac user who's a grapics designer, they will still claim the Mac's superior rendering capabilities. Frankly when they were still on those Motorolla chips there was a little truth to that (although not much with the processor speed gap narrowing) but now if you buy a out of the box PC that's dollar for dollar the same as a Mac you will see better performance :/ Frankly the Mac brand is just that. They build Macs for Mac people. Its why they have survived long enough to be reborn. As much as people like to tout the significance of MS lovers... they pale in comparison to the Mac Militia. | You guys crack me up. Why do you care so much about who buys what? You almost sound insulted that they aren't buying Windows PCs. I think you're too emotionally invested in the platform. |

I think I figured out one of the reasons I prefer the Mac. Simply, the reduction of choice.
I watched a TED talk recently that described how choice makes us miserable. http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/barry_schwartz_on_the_paradox_of_choice.html If you go into a big box store hoping to find a notebook, you can go insane trying to choose. Then when you leave, you're never really confident that you picked up the right one for you. If you go into the Apple Store, do you want a consumer notebook, or a professional notebook? Then within that do you want good, better, or best? I'm lucky enough that an extra $500 or so over the lifetime of a notebook doesn't matter. In fact, I would probably spend around that much to get the software I'd want. I'm posting this using the Windows 7 beta on my MacBook. So far I really like Windows 7, but if I want to use it on a PC notebook in the future, there are so many options I have no clue where I would look. |

Latch, I don't care what people buy. I find it funny that all too often I'm made fun of for not only choosing windows but then further ridiculed for actually paying for it lol.
Mac users, Linux users are first in line to make fun of another for their purchase. "You paid for that" "Paying your BillG tax". Most windows users just keep on plugging ignoring it. My favorite thing is I've had people whom I'm close to talk to me "I bought a powerbook the other day I think I love it" to jeer me only to have them tell me a couple months later they had buyers remorse for any number of reasons. If you buy into the commercials or the Linux FUD that's up to you. The cost is yours to bare not mine :) |

#5 The concept that one has too many choices is a bad thing is the exact reason why we have a 2 party political system (1 party to most). How well is that working out for us?
He actually offers up that Ma Bell's phone options were a good thing... in nearly every case he gives the concept is just as sad. Sadly the same arguments have been made for thousands of years for all types of governments that "controlled" people. The Just Dictator syndrome is more and more prevelent these days :/ |
