Changes put everything 'in the cloud', and encourage crowdsourced distribution methods Microsoft's got an uphill battle going on with Games for Windows. It's got to try and take Steam's market share by battling Microsoft's poor reputation among many gamers, while still keeping the major publishers happy, who've been working with Microsoft for years. At the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Ars Technica had a chat with Microsoft to try to find out what the company is planning - both in the looming update and also in the future. | ||

| While I understand them wanting to stop piracy - what really annoys me with services like Steam is when I manage to get a game a few days early, pay for it - yet can't actually play it until launch day. It irritates the hell out of me - and with this coming to Games for Windows Live! it'll annoy people even more and stop them wanting to use the service that has just started to get half decent on the PC |

| I'm never in a rush for any game, but what bothers me the most is damned auth servers. I still pull out X-Com every year or two. I've had that game since it came out in 1993. Can MS or Steam guarantee I'll be able to play a game I purchased even 5 years later? Can they guarantee they will issue a patch to remove the DRM goodness when they decide to shutter the auth servers on a whim? |
