MS exec claims error on .Net Server date | |

A Microsoft executive, who on Wednesday said that the next version of Microsoft's server operating system would be released in mid-2003, now says he gave incorrect information. A very apologetic Enrique Murray, Microsoft's Latin America marketing manager, said on Friday that Windows .Net Server remains on track for release toward the end of the current calendar year. Murray sat in on a phone interview the IDG News Service had with Neil Charney, director of Microsoft's .Net Platform Strategy Group, on Wednesday. Asked when Microsoft would release Windows .Net Server, Charney answered that he believed the product would be released by the end of the 2002 calendar year. But Murray then jumped in and corrected Charney, saying the product's release date was the middle of the 2003 calendar year. Murray said on Friday that he mixed up Microsoft's fiscal year with the calendar year. Microsoft's fiscal year begins in July. | ||

Basically a company wants to chose a fiscal year that best meets their business cycle. A good example would be a toy store. They do the plurality of their business in December, but have to deal with a great number of returns that most likely carry thought into January. For them to choose their fiscal year to end December 31, would create more trouble than it was worth, in terms of attempting to properly account/project the January returns. Also, they are just too busy dealing with the process of dealing with the December sales and the January returns to spend their time on the year-end accounting aspects. So they most likely will choose a point in time when they are less busy to set as their fiscal year. Conversly, a pool supply store would not want to close out the year in the middle of summer -- their busy time of year. OK, that doesn't exactly explain why MS has chosen July as their fiscal year, but I am sure there are others out here who are more familiar with MS than I am. I know that they try to get their software (Windows, X box, etc.) out towards the end of the year for holiday sales, so maybe like the toy store example, they have found the summer to be slower, and therefore a better time to focus on year-end account aspects.
