What the EU might force Microsoft to do | |

The European Union is considering forcing Microsoft to distribute rival browsers as part of Windows, the software maker disclosed in a regulatory filing this week.
As part of its quarterly filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission filed on Thursday, the software maker offered more details on the EU's statement last week that it believes Microsoft's inclusion of a browser in Windows violates antitrust law.
Microsoft said that the EU is considering forcing computer makers, known as original equipment manufacturers, or OEMs, to offer multiple browsers with new Windows PCs.

Long ago when man was limited to dial-up, Microsoft was "highly encouraged" to include a link to AOL, or an AOL install disk, along with Windows. That worked out well for AOL, didn't it? Including other browsers in Windows will not change the status quo. People will still use what they like to use whether it's preinstalled or downloadable.
What a waste of time and money. |

| #1: I'm not sure what you mean. I seem to recall AOL did pretty darn well and became a virtual online empire, thanks in part to bundling with MS. Their fall came much later after everything had changed on them and their core membership outgrew them. |

| Latch: The point was that forcing MS to open up Windows applets to competitors does not insure success for others. AOL was big by virtue of beign early, and market savvy by mailing out hundreds of millions of install disks. |

| #4: Ah, OK. Well, nothing in life is certain. Being bundled with Windows does not mean you will succeed, but it's a very difficult thing to overcome when your main competition gets a free ride along with Windows. I really believe that most users will use whatever is put in front of them. Not most "business" users, or most "tech" users -- just users in general including your mom, grandma and so on. They aren't going to go out looking for a better browser, even if they are aware there are alternate choices. Too bad the EU didn't think to do this about 10 or more years ago. Now it's a waste of time, money & effort. |

Ha ha ha, EU . . . The only "country" on the planet without a constitution. At least one that their constituents will vote affirmative for - that is if and when they actually get to vote on it.
Meanwhile, always a day late and a dollar short, the EU did just fabulous . . . fabulous I tell you . . . with that "N" version of Microsoft's products that they foisted on their citizens. Yeah, that has worked about as well as the vote on that telephone thick constitution! Pathetic . . . |

#6: It's people like you that give Americans a bad name. You're ignorant and jingoistic. What's pathetic (besides your take on everything non-American or non-Microsoft) is that the remedies to MS's anti-competitive actions are proving to be ineffective in correcting the misdeeds. The only penalty MS seems to respect is a large fine.
#7: Perhaps if MS had lowered the price, people might have bought it. But then MS knew that nobody would buy a version of Windows that had less for the same money. Latch, why would MS lower the cost of Windows? I'm sure that wasn't the spirit of EU's argument.
You can't honestly believe MS should drop the price for creating a new release of Windows that is missing part of the OS which can then be downloaded for free from MS. |
