Wow! This might actually take off. That is if most companies didn't run many aspects of their business from Microsoft products. I'm talking spreadsheets, access databases, legacy Windows apps, newer .net apps. It's not like you can just turn off user's desktops. Not only do you have to retrain the users on the new OS and office suits, you have to change the way they get their job done.
The business folks at Fortune 500 company I work for are so dependent on Excel and Access that the cost of converting countless battle-tested macros and scripts would be phenomenal. Additionally, we have many 3rd party apps that are tightly integrated with MS products and as of yet do not support other office suites. And as far as TCO is concerned, my experience with IBM is that they will bend you over on support costs whenever possible. With respect to Lotus Notes... no comment. |

You have to love vendor lock-in :) Although I must admit you tend not to admit that it's a very real reason why other OS' will have a very difficult time trying to succeed (in terms of market share) - as oppose to just assuming that they're all worse than Windows.
I completely agree on users being dependent on Excel - especially in the finance industry. You couldn't pry that away from their hands no matter what. I haven't seen the same regarding Access though - at least not recently. Word is the only other application that users tend to grip on to but it's a lot easier to switch someone from Word to a compatible word processor than it is Excel. |

| "IBM fights Microsoft and gets bloody nose", is a highly likely future headline. A wiser long term business strategy would be for IBM to go after spinoffs of existing business and newly formed corporations before the firms get entrenched with MS technology. But then, is what IBM has to offer compelling enough for any company to choose their offering? It's not cheap. It's not proven (IBM's implementation of OpenOffice as Lotus Symphony is horribly buggy). It's not as versatile as a MS environment. |
