Microsoft Should Worry Less About Live, More About Linux | |

Microsoft is gunning mightily for Google in the Internet search and advertising space, but it might stand to benefit by putting some of that corporate focus back on its bread-and-butter: the desktop operating system.
Lots of commentary is coming forth about Microsoft's changes to its Live Search Cashback program where the software giant, essentially, is promising to make payments to those who find certain products through Live Search and then buy them. It's a nifty way to try and pick up share from Google. But by placing so much emphasis on search of late (including it's failed effort to buy Yahoo), is it finally risking the edge it has long held with Vista?

Um... no. Last I checked, sites like Facebook & Myspace have many times the number of users as Linux. Not only that, Windows Server growth has outpaced Linux growth pretty damn consistently.
So Microsoft is winning, or at least maintaining its position, in the server space... and nobody would argue that Linux is making any serious inroads on the desktop. Live is Microsoft's way of fighting back against both Google and Apple at the same time. It's critical for the company's future. |

| #3: I read an interesting article yesterday that talked about Google vs Microsoft in a way I hadn't thought of before. The gist was this: Google is suckering MS into fighting in an arena Google doesn't really care about. Google makes no money from Google Apps and the other stuff they put out. All of Google's money comes from search. Yet, they've managed to get MS in a lather because Google is chipping away at an area of profitability for MS (office apps), while MS is fighting back on that very same turf where Google makes no money and doesn't really care. In other words, what Google is doing hurts Microsoft, but Microsoft's response does not hurt Google. |

| I hardly think Google doesn't care. They may not be making money on it, but they are certainly spending money on it. They are spending money on Salaries and resources to develop Google Apps and keep it hosted. They have been trying to branch out from search for years, just as MS has expended into hardware, search and other arenas, Google too wants to be more than what it is. |

Latch, put another way, Google is expending resources not in their core compentency while their stock price falls through the floor. It has lost nearly 2/3 of its value since its peak in late October of 2007.
If I were a shareholder, I would be as pissed as the Yahoo! shareholders have been/are and oust the dufus in charge. That is, before he runs it into the ground like he helped do first at Sun and then, at Novell. Schmidt, aka the dufus in charge, apparently has some expertise as a campaign advisor. Perhaps, he can find work in that field in the future. |

| Google apps are free for the general consumer. Business Google apps has fees, and they are making money on those fees. |
