NEW YORK (AFP) – PC Magazine, which has documented the explosive growth of the personal computer since 1982, announced on Wednesday that it was dropping its print edition next year and going online only. PC Magazine publisher Ziff Davis Media, which recently exited Chapter 11 bankruptcy, said in a statement that the final edition of the iconic magazine would be the January 2009 issue. | ||

Kind of sad in a way. I still have Byte's last issue (and ironically they replaced my remaining subscription time with PC Magazine). Then again it's not really a big loss. They were mostly ads these days, and you can get faster and more up to date information online anyway. All without taking up huge amounts of space to store magazines, and needlessly murdering trees. This once 3/4" thick monster of a magazine, with the most extensive reviews ever done in the industry, has become a petite, 1/4" thick (at best, and most of that is advertising) shell of itself.
Sadly, I doubt it will be missed. I still subscribe. I guess that ends next year. The only magazine I miss more is the old, tabloid sized MacWeek. I was lucky enough to qualify for a free subscription to this wonderful weekly. TL |

| I for one will miss it. It's been one of the staples in our depts' restroo....I mean library. Maybe we can set up something with a display and wireless keyboard.... |

#2, I have missed it for many years. What survived was just something called PC Magazine, not the real thing.
I still have 5 years worth of issues, from way back. I started learning x86 assembly and Windows programming in pure C (using a DOS compiler) from that magazine. This post was edited by longtimelurker on Thursday, November 20, 2008 at 11:34. |
