Microsoft Announces Plans for No-Cost Consumer Security Offering | |

REDMOND, Wash. — Nov. 18, 2008 — To address the growing need for a PC security solution tailored to the demands of emerging markets, smaller PC form factors and rapid increases in the incidence of malware, Microsoft Corp. plans to offer a new consumer security offering focused on core anti-malware protection. Code-named “Morro,” this streamlined solution will be available in the second half of 2009 and will provide comprehensive protection from malware including viruses, spyware, rootkits and trojans. This new solution, to be offered at no charge to consumers, will be architected for a smaller footprint that will use fewer computing resources, making it ideal for low-bandwidth scenarios or less powerful PCs. As part of Microsoft’s move to focus on this simplified offering, the company also announced today that it will discontinue retail sales of its Windows Live OneCare subscription service effective June 30, 2009. | ||

| I'm not sure why MS feels compelled to offer anti-malware software for free, or otherwise. One Care looks nice, defrags, and protects you from weak malware, but is useless against zero day exploits. I'll stick with Avira AntiVir. It works well. |

I think this is very interesting news. The article says the new "security solution" will have a "small footprint" for "low bandwidth" situations.
So... MS will make OneCare free to all current and future users of XP. Presumably MS does not believe this product is necessary for Vista and W7 but only for old machines with XP as well as netbooks. It would seem they do not see a need for additional security solutions moving forward outside of the business arena. |

| I think you misread the article. OneCare is being discontinued. This new software to replace it is completely different and is for Windows XP, Vista and 7. |
