Windows 7 no threat to netbook Linux | |

Henry Kingman: I've been nonplussed the last few weeks as ordinarily sane compu-journalists opine that Windows 7 will somehow kill Linux on netbooks. This weekend, I had a chance to actually see XP running on an EEE 900, and I can tell you, Linux has nothing to fear from Redmond.

Why post something from a Linux fanboy on this site?
The title of the article suggests that the author actually tested Windows 7. Nope! he's testing XP and admits "I haven't really used Windows in 10 years". Wow there's some objective analysis. Hey, I haven't slept with the author's daughter in 10 years but does that mean I know for a fact she's still lousy in bed? |

#1: What he was getting at was that if XP sucks on a netbook, Vista R2 will crush the machine's soul.
#2: Exactly. #3: It's no different at all. It's the usual MS "Our next OS will be awesome! Just wait!" cycle. The fact that some people are playing with an early version is irrelevant. I do believe that there is nothing wrong with MS announcing their future plans & timeline, as the big corporate customers need that kind of roadmap. However, the constant rah-rah over-hyping that goes along with it is annoying, and inevitably leads to disappointment. MS doesn't care though, so long as they get your money. |

| #5: Good for them. Some people drive scooters on the Autobahn, too. They're slow as molasses, but they get there eventually. Most people prefer much faster cars. |

Oh I've tried Pepsi and I don't like it, therefore, all of Pepsico's products must suck and any future products will suck even more. #8: But you're missing what I'm getting at, and the article author's point. The author is saying that, in his opinion, Linux-based netbooks give consistently better performance than XP-based ones, and therefore, any Vista/7-based netbooks will be even worse as he perceives Vista/7 to be slower than XP. Parkker saying that some people are running 7 on a netbook may be factually true (or not), but that in no way is a counter-argument that Linux has nothing to worry about from MS as far as netbook performance is concerned. A better argument would be benchmarks showing 7's performance on a netbook as compared to Linux distro X. Just saying 'people run 7 on a netbook' is a nice statement, but nothing more. He's not giving an detail about the experience of those may or may not be running 7 on a netbook. It would be like us arguing over whether or not a Honda X is faster than a Ford Y. Then parkker jumps in to say some people drive Hondas. That's nice & all, but says nothing about whether or not Honda X is faster than Ford Y. While I have no practical experienc with 7 on a netbook, I know Linux can run on almost anything, so it's not a shock to believe that Linux would run much better on a limited hardware platform than Vista or 7. Linux runs on cellphones. Does Vista?

#9: I'm getting the authors point exactly - he's assuming that Win 7 will not be able to run on a netbook based on his experiences with XP. You criticize parker for not providing any facts - how about jumping on this guy. We have know idea about the optimizations that are going on under the hood of 7. How then can anyone make a blanket assumption like that?
Saying Vista will not run on a a netbook is one thing - its been tried without success. But to say that an alpha OS that from some accounts is being targeted at this market will not be able to compete with an OS that no one "really" wants is ludicrous! Can we wait until it reaches beta 2 before we make an ass of u and me. |

| #10: Considering 7 seems to be Vista R2 or Windows 6.5, I believe it's proper to think that 7 will perform similarly (or worse, depending on how much extra stuff MS decides to make 7 run by default) to Vista. I'm not sure your comparison of Vista to Linux is valid, and you may want to update your definition of 'no one' to include the DoD, major US corporations, and many federal & municipal governments around the world. Or at least the ones MS hasn't tried to bribe into using Windows, unlike Nigeria which is back in the news. |

the *nix on nets only mantra ignores the very rapid progress made on the hardware front and the news from WinHEC that was all over less costly and more powerful small/integrated IC's with a lot of emphasis coming from major players in support of what they themselves characterized as "strong demand for Vista" on small, lower powered netbooks - and that growth in that market was slowed by current OS choice.
You should visit the WinHEC site and read/watch the content and what industry planners are work actually saying. AMD is set to launch its own "Atom Killer" and go after this market and by Q2 of 09, 2 GB will be the norm. |
