Firefox Reaches 20% Market Share for First Time Ever | |

The good folks at Mozilla are trumpeting a new report by global analytics service Net Applications that documented a 20% global market share for two out of four weeks in October. It's a new high bar of popularity for the 2nd most popular browser in the world. Firefox is safe, standards compliant, extensible...and not made by Microsoft. That's what most people like about it and the number of fans is growing. Can you guess what percentage of ReadWriteWeb visitors came here using Firefox last month? | ||

Firefox has prefetch. Every time you use the Google search box, Firefox prefetches the first page of search items. These "fetches" inflate Firefox's presence in weblogs.
This grossly overinflates the count for Firefox. |

| I'll bet you a shiny Alaska quarter that the figure is close to 10%. Then again, how is it measured? If a page is prefetched isn't that simply a time saving mechanism that doesn't add to the browser count, on the server, as the IP address being logged would be identical after prefetch so that the post-prefetch visit is not counted as a unique visit. |

#5 Lets say you prefetch 20 pages. You find what you want in the first 5.
That could be 5 sites you would have visited and 15 you never would have without the prefetch. Your IP address ends up in 4 times as many logs as it would have ... for every search. YMMV. |
